Assalamu Alaikum! As the academic year comes to a close, I would like to thank everyone who takes the time to read through Madina’s newsletter and makes our hard work worth it. Our team has been consistent and impressive this year, always submitting high quality work to truly represent the smart students of our school. We also could not have done it without Mrs. Masuda, who creates the lovely format you see every month on Smores. Thank you all.

This year passed by in the blink of an eye, and we are so excited to see what comes next. From UCMUN to History Day to Law Day, Madina’s students kept us writing with their successes. Alhamdulillah. Our Alumni also kept our pens busy, kindly visiting and advising our high schoolers on what steps come next. Jazakallah. May the coming year bring even more growth, meaningful experiences, and moments of joy for our students, staff, and alumni alike. InshaAllah.

Enjoy your summer and we will see you again in the fall!

History Day Fundraiser

Madina Academy’s History Day fundraiser brought the community together to support twelve talented students to the National History Day Contest in College Park, Maryland, to represent Madina Academy and Connecticut. Amazing food was served including burritos, tacos, and ice cream, creating the perfect mix of savory and sweet. Additionally, through communication on setting up the bake sale, history day students truly enjoyed working with one another towards a common goal. “It was an unforgettable experience, and a beneficial way to spread joy around the school”, says Sohyla Hassan in seventh grade. Thanks to the incredible generosity and donations made by students, parents, and teachers, to help our historians shine on the national stage. InshaAllah, may the students have a successful and fun time at Maryland!

Mishkah University

On May 22, 2025, we took our second-semester final exam at school. This semester's unit focused on manners, and it was part of our program with Mishkah University.

Honestly, everyone worked super hard this semester—studying, asking questions, and trying to learn more about our deen. The final went well, and I just want to say congrats to all of us for doing such a great job!

Let’s keep it up and keep learning more next semester, inshallah!

Echoes of the Year Echoes of the Year

By: Faqiha Faheem, Fatima Vahora, and Sarah Elsherbini

As the school year comes to a close, it’s only natural to look back on what made it memorable, both the chaos and the calm. From unforgettable trips to hard-won lessons, students had plenty to say about what stuck with them most this year. Here’s a glimpse into the laughs, growth, and advice they’re taking with them into summer and beyond.

For many students, this year’s biggest lesson wasn’t taught in a classroom. As Juman put it best, “Time management isn't optional. You either figure it out or drown in it.” Her late-night calls with friends, filled with laughter and venting, weren’t just emotional lifelines. They were a reminder of how community helps us survive the stressful days.

Another gem from Juman? “Don’t wait until the last minute, even though you think you’ll make it. Things pile up fast, and it’s so much easier to keep up than to catch up.” Everyone, take notes and maybe pin that one to your wall.

For Marium Nazir, the highlight of the year was the senior trip to New York City. “We had so much fun exploring the city, laughing nonstop… That trip made me realize they’re more than classmates—they’re like sisters,” she shared. It wasn’t just a getaway but a reminder of the bond they built over the years.

Marium also learned to embrace mistakes instead of fearing them. “Every mistake teaches you something,” she reflected. “It helps you become a better version of yourself.” That kind of mindset is exactly what’s fueling her as she prepares for a future in nursing.

And then there’s Zaynab, whose favorite memory was UCMUN—a Model UN weekend that mixed nerves, new friendships, and college-life sneak peeks. “We got to stay the whole weekend at UConn—it was so fun, even though we were all exhausted by the end,” she said with a laugh. In between debates and research, she also picked up valuable skills in public speaking and confidence.

Her advice to incoming students? Short and sweet: “Don’t doubt yourself. If you think you can do it, just go for it.” And when asked about her summer plans, she was quick to reply: “First of all, my plan is to relax—obviously.” Relatable.

As the final bell approaches, we walk away with more than just finished notebooks and graded exams. This year gave us inside jokes, last-minute miracles, deep friendships, and lessons we didn’t know we needed. Whether you’re coming back next year or moving on to the next chapter, carry the good stuff with you.

We’ll miss the mess, the memories, and maybe even the Monday mornings. But for now, enjoy the summer. You’ve earned it. 🎓

Madina’s Dress Code: Rules Over Reasons Madina’s Dress Code: Rules Over Reasons

By: Minal Khan

A recent issue concerning dress code in Madina Academy has taken place recently. Higher ups are not letting girls wear jilbabs to school because it makes them look “different” from others. Students are expressing frustration, claiming that it is unfair and hypocritical. The jilbab is an abaya that covers from head to toe completely and some would say more modest than the actual uniform requirements. If the school really cares about the uniform looking the same for everyone then everyone should be required to buy the same abayas/hijabs. A student being refrained from covering her awrah is not something that should be shrugged off in an Islamic school. Individuals are complaining about teachers letting actual ongoing consequential problems go but dress coding girls for wearing full coverage clothing. Furthermore there is nothing in the book of guidelines for the school saying wearing jilbabs is unacceptable. The colors are maroon and beige, the neck is covered, and it is more comfortable to wear all day. So what is there to criticize? Perhaps focusing on something like the quality of education here would be a better option.

Alhamdulillah, we’ve had such an amazing and blessed year. Unfortunately, since school is coming to an end, we cannot do another hunt. Instead, we have some fun activities! Jzk!

Let’s see who can complete these spring activities in under 10 minutes!

Did you know?

  • Bats are the only flying mammals.

  • Snakes smell with their tongue.

  • A chicken once lived without its head for 18 months.

  • Ketchup was once sold as medicine.
