The Power of Peers

TEA’s Texas Complex Access Network (TX CAN) is your go-to source for continuing education and resources for supporting students with significant cognitive disabilities. This month we would like to remind you that peer interaction is powerful for all students, especially for students with significant cognitive disabilities. Learn more in TX CAN’s free online course, Creating and Sustaining Peer Networks.

The course is the seventh in our Inclusion Series and focuses on facilitating authentic friendships for students with significant cognitive disabilities and complex access needs. Participants who complete this course earn 3 hours of CPE credit and a digital badge.

Also, check out the Fidelity Checklist and Reflection Tool: Creating and Sustaining Peer Networks that accompanies the course and is available in our document library. The tool will help you assess where your team is currently at and plan active steps to move forward with peer networks.

TX CAN – Dive into the resources and training we have for you!

TEA’s Texas Complex Access Network (TX CAN) is here to help you learn about best practices and plan effective instruction for all students. This month, we highlight two resources, the Sample Grading Rubric” document, and the Evidence Based Practices for the Education of Students with Down Syndrome online course.

The Sample Grading Rubric document demonstrates how a rubric can be used to obtain a more specific and objective activity grade.

Our second highlighted resource is the Evidence Based Practices for the Education of Students with Down Syndrome course. This course reviews how some characteristics of Down Syndrome might impact learning and shares strategies for teaching academics and functional skills, as well as visual supports for behavior. Enroll today in this self-directed, online course providing 6 hours of CPE credit and a digital badge.

TX CAN has what you need to grow your professional toolkit! Visit txcan.tea.texas.gov to stay on top of new research and best practices, or reach out to me, your regional TX CAN contact, for support!
