Lutherans and MLK Day!

Happy New Year! 2025 is sure to be a blessed year as All Things Work Together for God’s Good Purposes. Interestingly enough, in reading an amazing book on Dr. Martin Luther (1483-1546) titled: Martin Luther: The Man Who Rediscovered God and Changed the World by Eric Metaxas (@2017).

Despite having grown up in the Lutheran Church since birth I never knew what I learned from reading this book. I learned that the famous Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (whom our Holiday in January honors) was actually named for Dr. Martin Luther the protestant reformer who changed Europe and the world in the 1500’s through his desire to have open debate regarding God’s Word, The Bible and ultimately siding with a view of The Bible that was different from Rome’s. This hence led to the birth of our modern idea of freedom.

The same Dr. Martin Luther that my Christian denomination is named for, ‘Lutheran’, is also connected to the National Holiday in January named for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Interesting, but how did this honoring someone by changing your name to theirs come about? Author Eric Metaxas drew me into his book on Martin Luther in the preface to the book (attached excerpt) when he shared that Baptist Pastor Michael King traveled to a conference in Germany in 1934 and during his time was so moved by what he learned about who Dr. Martin Luther was and the profound impact his life and works had on not just the Christian Faith, but on people in terms of how they think about freedom and democracy. Pastor Michael King formally changed his name to Martin Luther King, and changed the name of his young namesake son from Michael King Jr. to Martin Luther King, Jr. Yes, the MLK that is honored by our January holiday. If you are up for the challenge, check out this fascinating historical biography on Martin Luther. If you read this book, I’d love to hear what you think. It is always fun to learn new things – isn’t that what we are all about? Let’s hope so! Blessings & Happy New Year.

Red Hill Lutheran Faculty and Staff Serve at the Orange County Rescue Mission Red Hill Lutheran Faculty and Staff Serve at the Orange County Rescue Mission

On December 25th, Red Hill Lutheran faculty and staff, along with 5 staff children, served at the Orange County Rescue Mission (OCRM), sorting hundreds of Christmas toys that will surely bring joy to families in need. It was a day of teamwork, joy, and faith in action.

The Orange County Rescue Mission provides housing, food, education, counseling, and job training to individuals and families facing homelessness, transforming lives with dignity, hope, and restoration.

Service and Innovation

This experience connected to our faculty book study of Vintage Innovation by John Spencer, who reminds us that "Sometimes, the best way to learn global citizenship is to serve the local community." By serving others, we model empathy, compassion, and faith in action to our students, preparing them to become servant-hearted global citizens.

Soft Skills in Action

Through collaboration, communication, and teamwork, our day at the OCRM reinforced the importance of soft skills essential for students in a globalized world. These real-world experiences nurture gratitude, work ethic, and new perspectives.

Faith in Action

Serving others allows us to share Christ’s love and demonstrate the joy of giving, especially during the Christmas season. At Red Hill Lutheran, we believe that small acts of service can create a big impact, inspiring our students to live out their faith and serve others with humility.

The Red Hill Lutheran community is grateful for the opportunity to partner with the Orange County Rescue Mission. May we all remember that the greatest gift we can give is our time, love, and service—to the glory of God.

GARDEN GARDEN

open_in_new zoom_out_map

Dear Parents,

The RHLS Learning Garden is a curriculum based, multi-sensory, hands-on experience designed to enrich the student's knowledge and appreciation of God's creation. Garden curriculum supports what is taught in the classroom. For example, 4th graders learn about California, so they plant a California Agriculture garden and learn by touch, sight, smell and taste. What a way to reinforce the lesson content in the garden and in their classroom!!!

There is a Fall garden and a Spring garden. Both have planting and harvest visits. You can sign up for 1 or more teachers (use the TABS at the top of the page to sign up for other grades). It is very helpful if you sign up for all 4 visits for a teacher for continuity since each visit is based on what was taught and experienced during prior visits. However, if that is not possible, please sign up for what you can as we are grateful for any time you can commit to!

We also encourage grandparents or other relatives to participate. It's a great way to have a wonderful experience with your child or grandchild (the kids are so proud when their parent, grandparent, etc. are at the visit with them!).

You will receive 1 volunteer hour for every visit you attend. Since we get so many wonderful volunteers this year, we are asking for 1 volunteer from each class to LEAD the lesson; please don't let this hinder your willingness to volunteer. "LEADING" might mean reading a book or guiding students to plant or telling them about the craft or how to observe the garden and fill out their worksheet - guided instructions are provided in advance so please do not be intimidated - this is an easy roll and allows our garden leaders the chance to help kids and answer questions on a more individual basis. Plus, the kids love to see their parents’ involvement! If you are interested, please add in the comments that you are willing to lead.

Garden Preparation/Clean Out Days are not student visit days but typically on a weekend or afterschool where we need to clean out the garden to ready it for a new season of planting or where we need to make sure the garden looks spic and span for Open House. These are great opportunities for working parents to volunteer outside of the work day and usually go pretty quickly if we have lots of help! You will receive service hours for every hour you work.

Garden Maintenance Days are times between planting and harvest where we just need some extra help maintaining the garden, mostly pulling weeds, ensuring garden is clean, etc. These can be done in your own time (within the week noted) and will receive 1 hour of volunteer time for each time slot.

Pastor's Corner

Dear Red Hill Lutheran School Families,

I hope you had a wonderful and blessed Christmas and New Year! On behalf of the members and leadership of Red Hill Lutheran Church, we are thankful for your partnership in our ministry through Red Hill Lutheran School! As we begin a new year, please know that we are here to support and equip you and your family to follow Jesus as His disciples. You are always welcome to join us on Sunday mornings. We offer…

  • 8:00 a.m. (Classical worship) and 10:15 a.m. (Contemporary worship): Holy Communion is celebrated at both services every Sunday. We offer nursery childcare (Infant through five years during both worship services).
  • “DiscipleU” Bible studies and groups for all ages meets from 9:15 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and "DiscipleU” K.I.D.S. Fellowship from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15a.m.

Beginning in January, we enter into the church season of Epiphany. The term “epiphany” comes from the Greek word ἐπιφάνεια (epiphania) which means “appearance” or “manifestation.” In early church history, the feast of Epiphany originally celebrated the birth of Jesus. However, as the church established December 25th as the day to celebrate Jesus’ birth, Epiphany was designated as the day/season that focuses on the manifestation of Jesus as the Son of God, the Savior of the world. In Eastern Christianity, Epiphany was appointed as the day to celebrate the baptism of Jesus. In the Western churches, Epiphany became the day to celebrate the manifestation of Jesus through three great, Biblical events: The visit of the Magi, the baptism of Jesus, and the marriage feast in Cana, where Jesus turned water into wine.

The season of Epiphany is a time to celebrate the manifestation of Jesus Christ who is the fulfillment of God’s promises; both to His people, Israel, as well as to the world. Because the glory of God has been manifested in and through Jesus, we are called as His disciples to manifest His glory by growing in faith and living out that faith in the day-to-day events and relationships in our lives. In the words of the classic hymn, Epiphany points towards the promise and hope that..

As with gladness men of old did the guiding star behold; As with joy they hailed its light, leading onward, beaming bright; So, most gracious Lord, may we ever more be led by thee (“As With Gladness Men of Old.” Lutheran Book of Worship: #82).

On Sunday, January 5th, we began a new message series entitled, “The One For All!” The Gospel of Luke. Tradition tells us that Luke was an historian, being funded by a man named Theophilus (Luke 1.3) to investigate and record the life and ministry of Jesus. As we will learn in this series, Luke reveals that Jesus is truly, the “one for all;” a Savior who has come to save and transform the lives of ALL people. As one commentator has summed up Jesus’ ministry as described by Luke: “Jesus has come for the least, last and the lost.” The good news (gospel) that Luke tells us is that Jesus lived, died, resurrected, ascended and is returning one day to complete what He began while on earth: the salvation of all humankind...including you! I hope you can be with us!

As we enter into 2025, my hope and prayer for you and your family is that our Lord will deepen your faith, hope, and love as you serve Him. Again, if we can support you in any way, we are here for you! Happy New Year!

In Christ,

Pastor Seth

“When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, `Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.’ And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.” Luke 2:15-20

Journeying with you into 2025!

In this teaching series, kids will hear about John the Baptist's special role in preparing the way for Jesus and his ministry. John's story will help kids to say their camp motto, "I believe God gives me purpose. I believe God can speak to me. I believe God is powerful. I believe God's words are true."

A series on FOLLOWING JESUS

During his time on earth, Jesus' message was clear—from now on, things will be different. Jesus spent his life showing people how God wanted to connect with them and help them connect with each other. Because of Jesus, our world can be forever changed—we just need to follow him.

In this 4-week series from the Gospels, we'll explore what it means to follow Jesus and look at the life he invites us into. We'll see how we can trust Jesus is with us, how Jesus gives us peace, that we can trust Jesus loves us, and how Jesus gives us a place to belong.
