Dear parents, guardians, and students,

**Every week a different Academy student will act as a student ambassador for the weekly newsletter. Their message will feature some information about the student, The Academy, and what happened throughout the week.**

Hello,

I’m Hannah Carbone. I enjoy skateboarding, hanging out with my friends and family, and I love hanging out with my boyfriend. When I grow up, I want to be a realtor and be the best out there! Being social with people and helping them find their dream home is my goal. I want to be as confident and professional as Ms. Ray taught us all to be!

This week in The Academy we have been working on our Dystopian Speeches in English religiously; we are putting lots of hard work and dedication into our speeches! On Tuesday we took our spelling and vocab test (after lots of studying). On Wednesday we had our first Dress Rehearsal for our speech presentations! This is my favorite unit in English because Ms. Ray is teaching us to be confident and proud as we give our speeches. In American Government we have been reviewing for our unit 3 test and taking chapter 7 notes.

The Academy has been my life saver this year! I think that without The Academy I would be more shy, and I wouldn’t be able to have the opportunities that I do. The Academy has made me learn so many things that I wouldn’t know without it like: friendship, love, and gratitude. I appreciate every single person in the classroom, and I’m so grateful that I will always have someone to clap for me! Without The Academy I wouldn’t be able to graduate on time, but thanks to the people around me and the teachers guiding me every step of the way, I will be able to finish school on time and be the person I want to be!

Event Information
You are invited to attend dystopian speeches!

Students will be delivering 3 minute long speeches to a panel of judges (this could be you!). These speeches will be passionate pleas from a leader whose utopian country has recently become a dystopia. How do they get their utopias back on track?

English Notes by Ms. R

English students write a journal entry, practice a spelling word, and learn a new vocabulary word every day. They also practice grammar. This week students continued learning the building blocks of English grammar by studying proper sentence structure, fragment sentences, and run-on sentences. They also learned how to spell commonly misspelled words such as chef, chief, and receive and the root word verse as well as words like obverse and diversion.

The students/country leaders have created propaganda posters and practiced their speeches in hopes that they can get their countries back on track! Come listen to the students' speeches on the 27th and 28th to see if they can reclaim their utopias!

Students are also reading an independent reading book throughout the course of this trimester. This trimester they are reading dystopian novels such as: 1984 or Animal Farm by George Orwell, The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, etc . Students were able to select a book from 25+ different fiction dystopian books. The students read this book every day and write a paragraph about what they read. At the end of the trimester, they will complete a final project about the novel they selected.

If you would like to know what is coming up in Academy English, please feel free to review my trimester lesson plans. They can be found here.

Governement Notes by Mr. Fasso

This week in Government A we finished up Chapter 7 over the Judicial Branch. We went into explaining the Circuit courts and what are the differences between State and Federal courts and what the function of the Supreme Court is. We also discussed the idea of the Supreme Court and how "lifetime" terms are controversial. We spent the middle of the week reviewing for our final Unit Test of Government A. Friday we wrapped up the week by taking our Unit 3 Test which went really well for the students!

We are wrapping up the unit on motion. We have been doing several labs to try to keep it interesting. Next week we will start a unit on matter in terms of substances and mixtures. This will be our final unit. It is hard to believe the trimester is almost done.
