This Week’s Teacher Training: Capturing Kids’ Hearts This Week’s Teacher Training: Capturing Kids’ Hearts

This week, our Watervliet High School teachers participated in training for Capturing Kids’ Hearts, a nationally recognized program focused on building strong relationships and positive classroom cultures. The training gave our teachers practical tools to connect with students, create safe and respectful learning environments, and reinforce positive behavior.

At its heart, Capturing Kids’ Hearts is about making sure every student feels seen, valued, and supported—because when students know they are cared for, they are more engaged, motivated, and successful in school.

We are excited to bring this approach into our classrooms and look forward to the positive impact it will have on our students throughout the year.

Senior Sunrise will take place on the first day of school, August 25th at 6:15 am on the Watervliet football field.

Senior Sunrise is a high school tradition where seniors gather before dawn to watch the sunrise together, often on the first day of their final year. It's a symbolic event signifying the start of their last year as a class and allows them to bond with friends and classmates while creating memories.

We want to thank Biggby Coffee in Coloma for donating coffee and hot chocolate!!

Thank you to Eli and his parents with Mr. Clean in Watervliet for providing donuts!!

Huge shoutout to The Side Track Cafe for donating biscuits and gravy!!

Donuts and refreshments will be provided.

We really hope to see everyone there!

Schedule change forms will be available the first week of school. Changes will not happen at orientation or open house unless it is a mistake on our part.

REMINDERS FOR DUAL ENROLLED STUDENTS! REMINDERS FOR DUAL ENROLLED STUDENTS!

Dear Panther Parents/Guardians,

We are excited that your child is participating in dual enrollment this semester. This opportunity allows students to earn both high school and college credit, while also gaining valuable experience with the rigor and responsibility of college-level coursework.

To ensure success, please review the following expectations for dual enrollment students:

Dual Enrollment Expectations

  • Attendance: Students are expected to attend their dual enrolled class every day and on time. If an absence is necessary, they must notify their college instructor in advance using the contact information provided.

  • Online Lab/Designated Classroom: When not in a college class, students must remain in the online lab or designated classroom, working on their dual enrollment coursework. They may not leave without permission from the media center if working in the media center.

  • Communication: Students are expected to email or speak with their college instructor whenever they have questions or concerns. They should get to know their instructor early and understand how to reach them.

  • Grades & Eligibility:

    • Students earning below a C will not be permitted to dual enroll the following semester at district expense.

    • Students with poor attendance at WHS may also lose future dual enrollment eligibility.

  • Course Changes: Students may not drop a dual enrollment course without first meeting with the counseling office. If they are struggling, they should seek help immediately for the WHS counseling office.

  • Withdrawal: Students who withdraw from a course after the allowable withdrawal window must reimburse the district for the cost of the course and will lose eligibility for the next semester. Students are not permitted to withdraw on their own. Contact the WHS counseling office if this is a concern.

  • Progress Updates: Students are expected to keep parents informed of their progress. Grades should never be a surprise at the end of the course. Students must also provide grades to the counseling office when requested.

  • Books/Materials: If the school rents a textbook for your child, it must be returned at the end of the semester. If the student pays for the cost of the book, once they pass the class, they will be reimbursed for the book.

  • Coursework Timing: Any speeches, assessments, or assignments must be completed during the scheduled dual enrollment time. Students may not miss other WHS classes or pull peers out of class to work on dual enrollment coursework.

  • Ownership & Responsibility: Dual enrolled courses are college courses, not high school classes. Students are expected to take full ownership of their learning, complete all work to the best of their ability, and manage their progress responsibly.

Please review these expectations with your student. After doing so, both you and your student should sign and return the attached form to the counseling office.

We are proud of the opportunities available to our Panthers and look forward to supporting your child’s success in dual enrollment. If you have any questions, please contact the counseling office.

Sincerely,

Christina Powers

📚 Academic Lab Support Classes for Core Subjects

Lab classes are available for:

  • Algebra I

Lab classes count as elective credit, are pass/fail, and do not require additional homework. The primary goal is to help students pass their core academic class and stay on track for graduation.

If you think your student would benefit from a lab support class, feel free to reach out to the high school office for more information.

🛠️ Extra Academic Support Available for 9th & 10th Graders

At WHS, we’re committed to helping every student succeed—especially those who may need a little extra support staying on track.

  • Review their homework and missing assignments

  • Help them stay organized

  • Answer questions or clarify directions

  • Ensure freshmen have completed their planners

If you feel your child would benefit from this daily support, please email Ms. Powers at cpowers@watervlietps.org to request a checkout teacher for your student.
