Superintendent's Message:
Dear Families/Staff,
This is a big weekend in the Salem Public Schools! On Saturday, March 14 from 11-2 pm, we are hosting DESIGN DAY at Collins Middle School. All students, families, staff and community members are invited to help dream big about the future of the Salem Public Schools. Please see flyers in English, Spanish and Portuguese and a video detailing the focus for the day.
Design Day is part of an ongoing effort to develop a 10-year Vision & Innovation Agenda alongside the district’s next three-year strategic plan. The day will feature interactive activities and small-group conversations that invite the Salem community to explore and discuss the following:
What “school” should look like in Salem in 2036 and beyond
How AI and other new technology should be used in our schools
How to recruit, train, and grow our best educators, and the roles they should play
How to prepare our students for success after high school
Please note that students can receive service hours for participating and we will be issuing a Certificate of Civic Leadership to all students who attend the session for at least 2 hours. We will have snacks, childcare, hands-on activities, and multiple ways for people to contribute.
On Saturday evening, Salem High School’s Boys Basketball team will meet Hanover High School in the MIAA Division 3 championship game at the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell Saturday at 6 p.m. Tickets are $24 and can be purchased here (includes all games on Saturday). If any members of the community would like to donate a ticket to benefit a Salem High School student, please contact the Athletic Department: Reilly Christie, Athletic Director– rchristie@salemk12.org or Angie Giancola, Athletics Specialist– agiancola@salemk12.org. Thank you for your support of our students during this magical playoff ride!
Go Witch!
Steve
This week’s Magic Moments That Matter recognition goes to Horace Mann Laboratory School Pre-Kindergarten educator, Ms. Krista Kavanaugh, who was nominated by a colleague. She is being recognized for the incredible way she nurtures and supports our youngest learners. Krista’s patience, creativity, and dedication shine through in everything she does. She thoughtfully supports each child’s development while helping them build confidence, curiosity, and a love of learning. Through her care and commitment, she lays a strong foundation that sets her students up for future success.
We are grateful to Krista for the meaningful impact she makes on the lives of her students and for the positive, supportive environment she creates every day.

REMINDER | Bertram Field is Closed to Accommodate SHS Spring Teams
The Salem High School and Collins Middle School spring athletics programs begin their seasons Monday, Mar. 16. As a community, we need to respect the space and time at Bertram Field. The field is now reserved after school for athletic team practices, games and events ONLY. Those not participating in a spring sport should not be at Bertram Field after school dismissal.
Students who are not on the CMS track and field team should not be on the field, in the stands or hanging out in the parking lot or near the locker rooms. Student-athletes from the SHS lacrosse and track and field teams as well as the CMS track and field teams who are on the field need the time to practice with their coaches and teammates.
We appreciate everyone's cooperation.
Thank goodness for longer days and warmer weather!

Part of National Nutrition Month is National School Dinner Week (Mar. 17-20), and Salem Public Schools Food and Nutrition Services wants your input.
Dinner will be served as usual at Salem High School from 3:05-4:35 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and SPS Food and Nutrition Services is asking SHS students to provide photos and reviews on their social media.
Students are encouraged to tag SPS Food and Nutrition Services on the following platforms:
- Instagram: @spsfoodandnutrition
- Facebook: @spsfoodservice
- X: @spsfoodservice
These reviews will help inform the SPS Food and Nutrition Services team what the dinner experience at SHS and Collins Middle School will look like in the future.
Among National School Dinner Week's promotions next week is a Protein Powerball Taste Test, the result of a recent suggestion that SHS dinners contain more protein to help students refuel following after-school activities.
