RHMS Monthly Parent Bulletin
April 2026
Message from the Principal
Spring Break is upon us! Before you get into full vacation mode, please read through our bulletin as we have a lot of important events and information in this one. Upon our return from break, weβll have about two months left, and theyβre crucial ones with state testing! Please keep attendance as strong as possible in this final stretch.
First, I want to congratulate our community on being a California Distinguished School! I do want to share that we were eligible for this award two years ago, but didnβt receive it because of our attendance. We have made great strides in that area, so thank you for your diligence in getting them to school every day! We already know how βdistinguishedβ we are, but I donβt like when something like attendance keeps us from getting the award!
In order to continue our status as βdistinguished,β please note the full schedule for state testing included in this bulletin. Please read it carefully and be sure to schedule appointments and breaks outside of the testing schedule. 8th graders only will be taking science during their science classes the week of April 21. All students will be taking the math SBA in their math classes the week of April 27 and ELA in their ELA classes the week of May 4. In addition, last year we had a total of only 7 students absent during ELA testingβthink we can break that record and have perfect attendance for all testing this year?!?! Scheduling make-ups is a challenging task, as they are then pulled from other classes. Please do all you can to have them in school all day (or at least for their testing periods) during those few weeks. Thank you in advance for your support. Letβs do this!
Planning for promotion is fully underway. All 8th graders will receive a hard copy of end of year activities information on April 7, including the permission slip for the 8th grade trip to SunSplash (it will also be emailed to parents because we know how 8th graders operate!). All 8th graders MUST return the permission slip, even if they are not attending SunSplash. It helps us know that everyone has received and read the information. The promotion ceremony will be in the big gym at ORHS on Monday, June 1 at 7:45 am. It should run about one hour. If any student needs to take the bus to school, the bus will be running both its regular schedule for a 7:30 arrival (elementary schools have a regular school day) AND a later 9:30 arrival, since we have a late start for 6th and 7th graders that day.
On June 1st, the sixth and seventh graders will have a late start in order for all teachers to attend the ceremony. Buses will be running 2 hours later than usual; if your bus usually arrives at 7:00, you should plan for it to arrive at 9:00 on that day. The school day will start at 9:50 (first class wonβt start until 10:27) and end at 2:04 (photo of schedule below).
At this time of year, the pace is usually fast and furious, and sometimes we throw a little bit of distinguished in there! I hope you and your family enjoy a fabulously slow vacation March 30-April 6! We look forward to having everyone back on campus on Tuesday, April 7 to finish this year out strong!
Happy Spring, Bengals!
Congratulations, RHMS, a CA Distinguished School!

π Library News
April is Poetry Month: First celebrated in 1996,National Poetry Month has grown over the years to become the worldβs largest literary celebration. To join in the fun, visit poets.org and find out about lots of great poetry activities like βPoem in Your Pocket Day.β Here in the RH Library, Iβll have βpoems to goβ available for students to take, as well as displays of poetry books and novels-in-verse. So many wonderful books have been written for kids in the novels-in-verse format - including our BoB book, Good Different. Please stop by the library and Iβll share some great recommendations with you.
March βBookβ Madness: Our annual March βBookβ Madness event parallels the NCAA tournament. Students vote for their favorite book series each week, and can win a bookstore gift certificate, just by voting. The winner will be announced Monday, April 13.
Battle of the Books (BOB) Update: RHMS hosted the βBattle of Buckeyeβ Competition on March 3. Teams from Camerado, Rolling Hills, and Valley View competed. Rolling Hills won 1st place in each of the three grade levels. The 7th grade team, the Word Warriors, also won first place in the All-Around Competition.

Our final BoB event of the school year, the Staff v Student Showdown was held on Wednesday, March 18 at 1:30 pm in the library. This year, the kids emerged on top! But most importantly, everyone had a wonderful time celebrating the joy of reading. Thank you to Mrs. Bowers, Mrs. Root, Mrs. Burkland, and Mrs. Rose for joining us!

Tile Wall
All Rolling Hills students now have a rare and meaningful opportunity to leave their mark on our school. You can purchase a personalized tile for your current or former student, and theyβll be invited to come paint their own design. Once finished, their tile will be added to the beautiful tile wall by the lunch areaβbecoming a permanent part of our campus. Imagine your student returning years from now and seeing their artwork still proudly displayed for everyone to enjoy.
You can also purchase a tile for a staff member so they, too, can leave their lasting mark on our school community.
Tiles can be purchased through our link, but donβt waitβthe last time this tradition happened was in 2014. This is a special chance you wonβt want to miss.

ππ½ Important Reminders
LATE ARRIVALS TO SCHOOL: Students arriving to school after 7:50 am, for any reason, need to sign in at the office and obtain a pass to class.
CHECKING YOUR STUDENT OUT EARLY: Students may only be checked out early by an adult whose name is listed on the studentβs contact tab in Alma. An identification card must be shown since we will not know every adult listed in Alma as a contact or an emergency contact. Please allow enough time to follow this procedure as it will not be waived because people are in a hurry.
ABSENCES: If your child is absent, please call the school at 916-933-9290, extension 4 or by using the on-line absence form (Bookmark this link), first thing in the morning. Please know that students are considered to be chronic absentees if they are absent more than 10% of the school year to date, whether absences are excused or unexcused.
INDEPENDENT STUDY CONTRACTS: The state of California requires that Independent Study Contracts may only be set up for students who will be out of school for three (3) or more CONSECUTIVE days not to exceed 15 days per year. Please note you must give the school a minimum notice of five (5) school days to take out a contract! We thank you for planning ahead. Please be aware that contracts cannot be taken out due to illness, and interdistrict students do not qualify for contracts.
