Dear parents, guardians, and students,

**Every week a different Academy student will act as a student ambassador for the weekly newsletter. Their message will feature some information about the student, The Academy, and what happened throughout the week.**

Hello,

My name is Ashley Briscoe. I am a Senior at Sturgis Brown High School. I am 18 years old, and I've been in The Academy since the beginning of last year. The Academy means a lot to me. It allows me to see my good friends every day. It also allows me to get in the right mindset to get all my work done and turned in on time. I also appreciate all of the teachers who are a part of The Academy; they always help with the questions that I have.

This week we had the first day of school, and we got to meet a whole bunch of newcomers to The Academy! We watched a poetry slam in English. We also started vocab, grammar, and spelling. We talked about how our poetry slam is going to be presented and judged in September. We also had a competition in Mr. Fasso’s class to be a Teacher Assistant; the winners of the TA competition were Winona Werlinger and Elijah Stroud.

What I am excited about in The Academy is having the opportunity to graduate early. Along with the experience of going on field trips. I’m happy with the opportunity to graduate early because many students don’t have that possibility. The Academy helps so many students get further in their education. If it weren’t for the Academy, I don’t think I would be graduating this year.

English Notes by Ms. R

English students write a journal entry, practice a spelling word, and learn a new vocabulary word every day. They also practice grammar. This week students are learning the building blocks of English grammar and studying proper and common nouns.

Additionally, students learned about a Poetry Slam that they will be competing in on September 23rd from 12:15 - 1:25! You are welcome to attend the Poetry Slam on the 23rd! The competition will take place in the Academy Building in room 201. Students also watched a documentary on a youth poetry slam called: Louder Than A Bomb.

Students are also reading an independent reading book throughout the course of this trimester. This trimester they are reading dystopian novels such as: 1984 or Animal Farm by George Orwell, The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, etc . Students were able to select a book from 25+ different fiction dystopian books. The students read this book every day and write a paragraph about what they read. At the end of the trimester, they will complete a final project about the novel they selected.

If you would like to know what is coming up in Academy English, please feel free to review my trimester lesson plans. They can be found here.

Principles of Algebra and Geometry by Mr. Leonhardt

We welcomed a new group of students to Algebra and Geometry Principles, and it was a great first week. Students learned about counting principles and how to find how many possible outcomes exist in given scenarios, like if they were to pick a random letter in the alphabet and roll a six-sided die. They also learned about how these principles can be used to create identification systems like license plates. Next week they will create their own identification systems.

Integrated Science by Mrs. Wheaton

In Integrated Science we are reviewing the parts of the Scientific Method. Next week we will use our skills to build and launch rockets! The class as been a pleasure; thank you for sharing your child with me.

Also, on August 27 two emails came to you through Infinite Campus with documents and a digital sign off. Please digitally sign these documents so that your child can get credit for it.

School to Work by Ms. R

This week all Academy students met with Ms. R to create a graduation timeline and identify who was eligible for School to Work credits. Unfortunately, students can only receive one credit from School to Work over the course of their high school career, so many of our hardworking Academy students have already maxed this credit limit out. Academy students continue to benefit the community through their work in a variety of ways and are employed by a variety of companies such as (but not limited to): Pizza Ranch, KOA, Culvers, and the Sturgis Brewing Company.
