A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Greetings Crusader Families,

Happy May! We hope you are having a wonderful Wisconsin spring. As you may know, next week is Teacher Appreciation Week. It is a time dedicated to recognizing and thanking the incredible educators who work tirelessly to teach and inspire our students every day. There are so many situations in which I see our teachers go above and beyond to ensure our students receive the best education possible. From early mornings to late nights, our staff work tirelessly to create engaging lessons, provide support, communicate with families, and foster a love of learning in our children. We are lucky to have so many staff here who truly care about each and every one of our students. It inspires me daily.

I encourage you to take a moment next week to show your appreciation for our teachers. Whether it's a heartfelt note, a small gift, or a simple thank you, your words and actions will mean the world to them. Let's come together as a community to celebrate and thank our amazing teachers for all that they do. A huge shout out to our awesome PTA for all you do to honor and treat our staff throughout the school year. We appreciate you more than you know.

Enthusiastically,

Jessica Gieryn

Goal Setting -End of the Year Reflection

On May 22nd, all students will reflect on the academic or behavioral goals they set for themselves this school year, as part of our academic and career planning. Please ask to see your child's reflection to discuss what habits they created this year and how those new habits supported their learning. Taking time to reflect and discuss the academic and behavioral progress your child made this school year is a great way to solidify the habits your child needs to be successful in school and life. You can find this information in your child's Google Drive in the College and Career Readiness folder.

Let’s Talk About It - Middle School Minds

Taking care of a developing brain is an important task. Here are two easy ways to support healthy brain growth.

Sleep and a lot of it! The correct amount of sleep for a middle school student might be more than you think. The CDC outlines that children between the ages of 6 and 12 should get between 9-12 hours of sleep daily. Youth between the ages of 13 and 18 should aim for 8-10 hours a night. 6 out of 10 middle schoolers are not getting enough sleep and technology use may be a factor in many homes. Do your best to put all electronic devices away at least an hour before bed.

Hydration is just as important. The brain consumes up to one-third of all water ingested and needs that water to keep connections strong. Simple sips throughout the day can increase focus, memory, and mood. Encourage your student to stay hydrated and give their brain the boost it needs.

KMS After School Spectator Expectations

Students who are attending after school sporting events, without a parent, need to report to the designated location immediately after school. Students are encouraged to quietly work on homework or other academic tasks during this time. If students have completed all their school work they are allowed to quietly socialize with their peers. If students do not want to stay after school but would still like to attend the sporting event, they will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

During the sporting event, students are expected to sit in the student section which is supervised by KMS staff. Students will not be allowed to sit in other areas of the gym unless they are accompanied by an adult. Spectators are not allowed to sit on the players side of the gym. If a student is attending a sporting event with an adult that is not their guardian or parent, that individual is responsible for supervising that student during the event.

Cell Phone Use - We are aware that students will need access to their cell phones during these events for a variety of reasons including but not limited communication with parents when they are to be picked up, change in plans, and or for emergencies. Students' cell phones should be stored in their backpacks, which will be placed next to the bleachers, and if they need to use them they will be allowed to with the supervision of a KMS staff member. Students are allowed to come to the Gold Office throughout the day to contact parents so that plans can be made or clarified. If students are not following cell phone expectations or using their cell phones in inappropriate ways, KMS supervisors do have the right to confiscate the phones and give them to parents when the student is picked up. Students who are not following expectations for after school sporting events will meet with KMS administrators and their participation in future sporting events will be discussed.

Students who receive school-based consequences (such as an in-school suspension) during the day may not be allowed to attend after school events for that day.

MORNING DROP-OFF

Please be kind and efficient while dropping off your child in the morning. There are two locations for drop off in the AM. You can drop off your child in the Main Office loop (south side) or the Student Services loop (west side). Here are a few reminders when dropping off students:

  • You may not stop or park in the Main Office loop or Student Services loop between the times of 6:45am - 7:20am and 2:43pm - 3:00pm. If you want to stop or park, please use the south parking lot.
  • When dropping off students, please pull all the way through the loop (by the bike rack) before dropping off.
  • Remind your child to be ready to exit the car upon drop off so other families are not waiting too long.

As always, be kind and courteous, thank you!
