Capital Bond Prop#2 - June 12

June 12, 2025

Dear Hastings Families and Staff,

We’re delighted to share the second installment of our three-part series spotlighting the key propositions in the upcoming
Capital Bond Vote on Tuesday, June 17.

Today’s focus: Bond Proposition #2: Instructional Space and Accessibility Enhancements.

Contingent on the approval of Proposition #1, Proposition #2 proposes a $19,049,465 investment to expand and modernize the Farragut Middle School/High School complex. The plan includes constructing new classrooms and special education spaces to support growing enrollment and diverse student needs. It also features a full renovation and relocation of the cafeteria to improve functionality and flow, as well as accessibility upgrades to ensure all students can navigate and learn in inclusive, ADA-compliant spaces. When paired with the foundational improvements in Proposition #1, this initiative represents a meaningful commitment to equity, excellence, and future-ready education in Hastings.

Expanding Access, Enhancing Learning Expanding Access, Enhancing Learning

A key part of the June 17 Capital Bond proposal focuses on making the Farragut Complex more accessible, functional, and future-ready. The current security vestibule is not fully accessible to individuals with disabilities. The proposed bond would create a new, streamlined entrance that enhances safety and ensures equitable access for all.

“I'm most excited about the renovations in this bond—they’ll make our school a place students can be proud of,” said Britney Stampfl, Special Education Teacher and FMS Special Education Coordinator. “Improving accessibility is a big part of that, benefiting both our students and their families.”

Sixth graders Esra and Ariella echoed the importance of these changes.

“My grandpa picks me up all the time—he has a torn calf and it’s hard for him to walk up the stairs,” shared Ariella.

“My dad has a torn meniscus, and it’s difficult for him to walk up stairs,” added Esra. “I feel like these upgrades would really benefit people like him and make it easier for families to join us for school events.”

The bond also addresses urgent space needs. A recent two-year study revealed that every available room is in use, limiting opportunities to grow essential programs. Proposed renovations include relocating the cafeteria—currently in prime instructional space—to a bright, new double-height dining area in the courtyard. This change would unlock six modern classrooms, ease overcrowding, and improve building flow.

Of the six new classrooms, one is a smaller-than-average space that still meets legal requirements for a special education setting. In public presentations, the district is referring to all six, while also noting that one is designed specifically for special education and small-group support—further reinforcing Hastings’ commitment to inclusive learning.

Space gains include:

FMS: 6 classrooms and locker alcoves
HHS: 1 small group space, a new community room, enlarged conference room, private conference pods, and flexible cafeteria seating
Shared: A new cafeteria and kitchen, plus improved flow to offices and classrooms

These upgrades aren’t just about facilities—they’re about building a stronger, more inclusive learning environment that reflects Hastings' commitment to equity, innovation, and excellence.
