Wildcat Rising: The Will to Win
Tell Them: Creating Winners in Life!
My first year of teaching and coaching seems like so long ago, but one thing from that year has stuck with me ever since! This story will hopefully inspire you as much as it has me over the years.
I worked for a guy named Mike Burns during my first year of teaching and coaching. As a young coach, I was eager to impress and hopefully help the student and athletes of our school be the very best that they could be. I remember one day after practice, Mike and I were watching our athletes practice shooting on their own and I initiated a conversation about one of our kids. I remember telling Mike how much I enjoyed coaching this particular student and how I was proud of his work ethic and what he did for our program. It was at this moment when Mike said something to me that I hope I never forget... He simply said, "Go tell him that."
It seems like a simple thing, but sometimes we sometimes overlook those simple things like telling our kids how proud we are of them. Rewarding positive examples with positive recognition is the best way to affect change in our lives. One of the things that we will try to do every day is to point out the positive and TELL our students how we feel about them when they do good things. As a parent, I need to remind myself to do this as well.
I wanted to share this with you all because I hope it serves as a reminder of how awesome our kids at Archer City really are. We are blessed to be able to teach, lead and grow them daily and I am thankful you all allow us to help build winners in life.
