Talking to Youth about Intimate Partner Violence Talking to Youth about Intimate Partner Violence

Millions of children are exposed to intimate partner violence every year. This exposure can have long-lasting negative effects on children's emotional wellbeing, along with social and academic functioning. Children who live with intimate partner violence can heal from their experiences. One of the most important factors that helps youth recover after exposure to intimate partner violence is a strong relationship with a caring, nonviolent caregiver, along with trauma-informed care. Talking to youth about intimate partner violence is critical. The NCTSN has resources to help caregivers, providers, welfare workers, and school staff support, listen, and talk to children affected by intimate partner violence.

Children and Domestic Violence for Parents Fact Sheet Series -- Offers support to parents whose children have been affected by intimate partner violence. This fact sheet series provides education to support their strength and recovery.

SAEBRS Screener Nov. 4 SAEBRS Screener Nov. 4

Skyline staff care deeply about our students, and we want to check in with all students to assess how they are doing. To assist us in this effort, we administering a behavioral wellness screener to all of our students. The SAEBRS (The Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener) is a brief and research-validated self-rating scale that is completed by students. This information helps us to understand the needs of all our students and to make effective plans at the whole school, class, and individual level.

A member of our screening & support team will follow up with any student whose scores indicate they may need additional support. This school year,Skyline High School will be administering the screener 2 times: in Nov, and March, during Skytime classes. If you would like additional information about this universal assessment and student supports we have at Skyine HIgh School please reach out to your child's counselor.

CONFIDENTIALITY STATEMENT

Results of this screener will only be reviewed by district mental health professionals and shared with appropriate staff and/or parents on a need-to-know basis. The screener is not being used to provide a diagnosis or to treat any mental health conditions, but rather as a guide to determine the current behavioral well-being of our student population.

OPT-OUT

If you have no objection to the screener, no further action is necessary, and your student will participate.

If you would prefer that your student NOT participate in this screening during this school year, please complete this form by October 20. If you have multiple students at Skyline, please complete the survey for each student. You will receive a separate e-mail for each student. If you opted your student out of the survey during a previous school year, you will need to opt them out again for this school year.

Philosophy

The Ann Arbor Board of Education believes that regular and punctual attendance by students results in greater levels of student achievement in a safe, secure, and orderly school, in higher staff and student morale, and in better preparation for post-high school life.

An essential part of all education takes place through social interaction that one cannot learn from studying texts. While independent work and/or research is vital, it is equally important to hear lectures, participate in activities and discussions, be exposed to other peoples’ ideas, and work with non-print materials. For this reason, daily attendance and participating in class is crucial and will impact student performance positively.

Students and their parents/guardians should understand that excessive absences, whether excused or unexcused, might often drastically affect class grades. Successful students are seldom absent.

Extended Absence Form (3 days or more OR 1 or 2 days before/ after a school vacation/break)

Form must be turned in and signed by all teachers and SLC Administrator 5 days prior to the first day missed. Please download the Extended Absence Form by clicking HERE.

Procedures

Students are expected to be in class, punctual, and prepared to participate in the learning process every day. Regular attendance and punctuality are essential if students are to make use of the educational opportunities in high school.

Excused Absences

To excuse an absence a student’s parent/ guardian must notify the school of the student’s absence within 48 hours with an acceptable reason.

Parents/guardians may excuse absences only for the following reasons:

1. Personal illness

2. Illness of an immediate family member

3. Death of a family member or close friend

4. Verified medical or dental appointment

5. Verified legal proceedings

6. Emergency removal for administrative reasons

7. Suspension from school

8. Approved school-sponsored or school-related activity

11. Observance of a religious holiday

Additional Notes

The grade level administrator must pre-approve absences for family travel/college visits to allow for make-up privileges. Families are expected to completely fill out a “Request for Extended Absence” form and turn it in at the SLC level office in advance.

Once an extended absence is approved, the student has the responsibility to make the appropriate arrangements with his/her teachers.

When leaving during your scheduled school hours with permission, the student must check out at the student entrance CA desk.

Students may not be excused from class in order to remain in school to study for a test, go to the media center, complete make-up work, or attend some other in-school activity.

Students who arrive after the beginning of their school day or who return after checking out must arrive at the student entrance and present their school iD for entry.

Excused Absence Procedure

When reporting an absence, please be prepared to leave the following information:

1. Student’s name

2. I.D. Number

3. Grade Level

4. Date(s) and time(s) of absence

5. Reason for absence(s)

6. Your name and relationship to the student

Unexcused Absences

Unexcused absences are those absences where the student fails to attend class and the parent or guardian has not notified the school in accordance with the required attendance procedures.

Make-up Work

Teachers must allow students to make up work due to excused absences. Two days will be granted for the make-up of one day’s excused absence. Students are expected to take the initiative in asking teachers for make-up work.

Tardies (Excused and Unexcused)

Students have a responsibility to arrive on time. An unexcused tardy occurs when a student arrives after the bell rings without an acceptable excuse.

Consequences for unexcused tardiness will be in accordance with the provisions of the AAPS Student Rights and Responsibilities handbook and the Skyline Student and Family Handbook.

Parent Notification

The primary method of notification arrives through a computerized message system to notify families of unexcused absences; parents can monitor through Powerschool for real time attendance. Parents may call the appropriate SLC office for student attendance records if needed. The primary responsibility for maintaining good attendance belongs to students and their families.

Student & Family Handbook Student & Family Handbook

Please Review the Student & Family Handbook

As we begin a new school year, we ask all students and families to take some time to read and review the Skyline High School Student & Family Handbook. The handbook contains important information about school expectations, policies, procedures, student responsibilities, attendance, academic guidelines, safety, and the many resources available to support our students. Taking the time to become familiar with this information will help ensure that everyone understands what is expected and knows where to turn when questions arise. Clear is Kind, and making sure our students and families have a shared understanding of our expectations is an important part of creating a safe, supportive, and successful school community. Please review the handbook together and reach out to us if you have any questions.
