NHS RaiderUpdateOctober 16, 2024

Parent-Teacher Conferences are Scheduled for Monday, October 21, 3:30-7:30 pm Parent-Teacher Conferences are Scheduled for Monday, October 21, 3:30-7:30 pm

Parent-Teacher Conferences offer us a great opportunity to engage in important dialog about the progress of our students. The NHS Staff will host parent-teacher conferences from 3:30 -7:30 p.m. on Monday, October 21st. I have included a few things to think about in preparation for a successful conference with your child's teachers. Please take the time to preview Skyward grades and chat with your child to determine which teachers you'd like to conference with in a couple of weeks.

Date: Monday, October 21

Place: Upper and Lower Cafeterias unless otherwise specified.

Time: 3:30-7:30 pm.

Report Cards: Parents should access students schedules and grades on Skyward.

Conference Structure: Limit your conferences to approximately 5 minutes.

The type of questions you might want to ask teachers:

  1. How is my child doing?
  2. Where is my child headed academically?
  3. How do you evaluate learning in your classroom?
  4. How is my child doing compared to their peers?
  5. How can we stay informed about our child's progress?
  6. What must my child do to improve?
  7. What can I do to help my child be successful?
  8. Is my child making adequate progress?
  9. What can we do at home to support learning?
  10. Does my child work well with others?

Additionally, the admin./counseling team will be offering a Parent Information Sessions:

Session I: 3:30-4:15 pm

  • Option A: (Media Center Main) Addressing hurdles to success (academic performance, attendance, mental health).
  • Option B: (Media Center Lab #1) Post Secondary Planning, Financial Aid process

Session II: 6:45-7:30 pm:

  • Option B: (Media Center Lab #1) Post Secondary Planning, Financial Aid process

We will host parent-teacher conferences again on February 24th, 3:30-7:30 pm. Please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns via email at sbaier@northfieldschools.org.

Principal Update: Digital Citizenship Week Principal Update: Digital Citizenship Week

zoom_out_map

Dear NHS Students, Families and Staff:

This week is about highlighting the needed awareness we all must have for digital citizenship skills. Our students have been exposed to some form of digital citizenship beginning in kindergarten with each skill building on the next. As student get older, the locus of control begins to shift to a shared responsibility with parents often caught in this awkward spot trying to manage this enormous responsibility from the back seat. At the high school, we use Raider Time to highlight different aspects of digital citizenship, but mostly, students are learning about the important aspects of how to navigate the world of technology in classrooms and throughout each day in the context of their learning or experiences with peers.

The NHS celphone/device plan stakeholder group redesigned the high school procedures to support the research and and what we know about the importance of setting limits on technology use and consumption. As we consider the digital literacy skills needed to effectively manage the day to day and big picture challenges of the technological world we live in, parents, students and educators need to work together to help navigate this often unpredictable and ever changing landscape.

By the time students arrive in high school, they are the primary drivers of their social media platforms. The important partnership with parents and educators is critical to the health and safety of teens. Check out the important information below and be sure to use this opportunity to talk with your teen about the good the bad and the ugly that is associated with technology, cell phones and social media.

Families can benefit from a variety of resources to help students develop good digital citizenship skills. Here's a list of resources that can be useful:

  1. Common Sense Media: Common Sense Media offers a wealth of resources for educators and parents to promote digital literacy and citizenship. They provide lesson plans, videos, and articles on topics like online safety, privacy, and media literacy.

  2. ConnectSafely: ConnectSafely provides valuable information on internet safety for parents, teens, and educators. They offer tip sheets, guides, and articles on topics like cyberbullying, social media use, and more.

  3. NetSmartz Workshop: Run by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, NetSmartz Workshop provides free, age-appropriate resources for students, parents, and educators to learn about online safety.

Sincerely,

Shane Baier

NHS Principal

Welcome to the Renaissance and the outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical farce, Something Rotten. Created by Grammy Award-winning songwriter Wayne Kirkpatrick, and successful screenwriters Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell, Something Rotten was lauded by audience members and critics alike, receiving several Best Musical nominations and hailed by Time Out New York as "the funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years".

Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as "The Bard." When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz.
