Greetings SMS Families,

We hope this message finds you well as we transition into the second semester at SMS. The official end of the first semester was on January 24th, marking an exciting time for students and staff alike as we switch up our exploratory classes. On January 17th, we wrapped up our second successful dance of the year. Despite the cold and snowy conditions outside, the students had a wonderful time at this well-attended event. This year, we introduced a supervised quiet space at the dance, providing students with a brief respite from the festivities, which was well-received by those who used it.

Looking ahead, we're thrilled to announce the return of our annual Students vs Staff Championship and All-Star Volleyball Games on Friday, February 14th. Further details will be shared in Physical Education classes, and please note that student participation in these events is contingent upon maintaining good academic standing.

With all of the recent weather-related cancellations, our academic calendar is really flying by. Before you know it, February Break (February 17th - 21st) will be upon us. Each year the faculty and staff eagerly anticipate hearing about the adventures our students get into during these breaks. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Monday, February 24th.

As we embark on the second half of the school year, let's continue working together to ensure the success and well-being of every student at SMS. Your ongoing partnership and support are deeply appreciated. Also, don't forget, that we offer after-school academic support every Tuesday and Thursday to help students achieve their full academic potential.

Sincerely,

Dr. Fisher

Eighth-grade students explored the elective courses they can take in ninth grade and beyond during a field trip to the high school! Organized into homeroom groups, the middle schoolers heard from teachers and current high school students on summaries and expectations of courses in Agriculture, Art, Business, Health, Music/Language and Technology. The students rotated between the classrooms and then returned to SMS. The students will meet with their counselors to choose their first and second choices of electives next year. Schedules will be released in August and will be provided at the ninth grade orientation held over the summer.

On Friday, January 24th, SES and SMS percussion students had the great opportunity to work with a special guest musician, Mr. Daniel Ornowski. Mr. Ornowski is currently the Elementary and Middle School Band Teacher at Lake Shore CSD, he is a graduate of SUNY Fredonia and University of Tennessee, majoring in music education and performance on percussion, where he also directed the marching band's drumline. Students worked with Mr. Ornowski in a small group capacity where they learned new techniques on the drums and had a masterclass on preparing for this coming season's marching band performances.
