Darkness, Snow, Light and Sun! What a week!
From the Principal's Desk:
Dear Salisbury Families:
Well, we survived the time change this week! The change in sleep schedule did make for some tired kids (and adults!), and the wacky snowstorm this week made life interesting, but the warm weather on some of our days last week seemed to help with that a bit.
Things that disrupt normal rhythms, like changes to our clocks, or snowstorms that disrupt morning plans and travel, are often a little dysregulating for kids, and by extension, a school. I continue to be appreciative of how flexible and responsive our staff is in recognizing student needs, whether as individuals or as larger groups, and responding to them. We also had several times this week where other staff absences made schedules complicated, and our teachers and staff handled these with kindness and professionalism.
It's been noted to me several times in the last few weeks just how much many in our community appreciate our teachers and staff, and the environment they provide for our students. I agree 100%, and feel like the luckiest principal anywhere.
Sincerely,
Bjarki

Little Caesar's Fundraiser Results!
Our "Little Caesar's fundraiser was a great success: The whole school sold a total of 267 kits, our goal was 260. Our dollar amount for goal was $6,000, we sold $6,651. Our fundraising profit for Salisbury Community School was $1,602- which will go directly to supporting kids' activities and experiences!
Special recognition goes to 5th grader Griffin Sheldrick, 3rd Grader Makenna Bowdish, and 2nd Grader Harper Whitney for being the top sellers! They will each receive their choice of a gift certificate for tickets to the Middlebury Marquis, or a gift certificate to Tinker and Smithy, the game story in downtown Middlebury. Also, several classes hit their incentive goals- so we'll be following up on those.
Thanks so much for your support of the students at Salisbury Community School! And thank you to FOSCS member Austin Bowdish for leading the way on this fundraiser. Considering a couple classes' incentives were that Austin would dye his hair a funky color, this could get interesting!
Fun goings-on at SCS.
5th Grade explores Shibori stitching!
From Art teacher Eileen Gombosi: The fifth graders have worked hard to master Shibori stitching. They have almost completed sewing Japanese calligraphy onto their shirts, the first step before dyeing the shirts to create the Shibori designs.
3-4 Mosquito Visit!
Craig Zondag, from the Lemon Fair Mosquito District, presented to 3/4 how he traps, identifies and learns about the 30 different mosquito species in our area. Kids had tons of questions about how floods in Vermont impact the environment and specifically how floods impact mosquito's survival (positively) and what effect that has on the larger ecosystem. Students also learned about how mosquitos are one way that the human population used to maintain balance and how, since we've started using pesticides to eradicate mosquitoes, it has effected the population of people in the world. All of this connected to the first principle of ecosystems:
1.). Everything is connected to everything else, which was really the basis of our last IB unit.
Craig was impressed with what students knew, their inquisitiveness, and asked if students could prepare posters, pamphlets, and reports to share their knowledge at the mosquito district's open house this summer. Students are excited and now busy working on those products!
Notes from ACSD:
Information on Pre-School Enrollment for 24-25 School Year:
ACSD Preschool Enrollment: If you have a child who will be 3 by Sept 1, 2024 and needs preschool placement, please fill out the preschool interest survey by the end of March. ACSD has two school-based programs: Mary Hogan and Bridport. Space is extremely limited, so we also encourage you to consider other preschool options. ACSD partners with prequalified private preschool programs to pay tuition for 10 hours/week, 35 weeks/year of preschool. This means your child could receive a tuition discount at a private preschool. Your first step is to enroll with the program directly. They will help you to complete the preschool tuition paperwork. Visit this site for more about which local programs have met the quality standards for partnership or contact Meg Baker at mbaker@acsdvt.org or 382-0045
ACSD Eclipse Update:
