Updates and Info from Dr. T
Farley Elementary School - Feb 1, 2025
Happy Groundhog Day!
TGIF everyone! Wow, next week's weather looks great. And we are thankful that our playground has re-opened. If you see Mrs. Alvarez (Board member) or Dr. Sutton (Superintendent), be sure to tell them "Thank you!"
February, especially for 2nd-5th and really all grades, is crunch time because we have our 2nd set of data from iReady, DIBELS, and the practice ACAP. We have good information on how to pinpoint and individualize our instruction. 3rd Grade Parents see below for updates regarding the Literacy Act.
Please help me welcome Ms. Tina Boles to Farley. She is a new teacher in Kindergarten, and we are thrilled to welcome her to the Farley family.
We have a fair amount of illness going around. We are sanitizing classrooms and reminding everyone to wash hands, etc.

Literacy Act Update
Greetings 3rd Grade Parents -
We recently received the ACAP Practice and Winter iReady Benchmarks results, and we have a more accurate picture of where we need to focus relative to the ACAP and its impact relative to Literacy Act.
DrT, Mrs. Ray (Literacy Coach), and Ms. Lollar (Literacy Specialist) will schedule a zoom meeting next week for parents. Look for an email on Monday.
Farley's Report Card Score
The Alabama State Department of Education recently released School Report Card scores and Farley Elementary was awarded a 94!!! This score represents a multi-year trend of improvement in Academic Achievement and a significant reduction in the percentage of students who are considered Chronically Absent. The three-year trends are visualized below:
Attendance
Parents may excuse only 8 days for the entire school year.
Parents - remember that excuse notes must be submitted promptly. The HCS expectation is that within 3 days, a parent or doctor's note is submitted to the school. After 8 excused absences (not individual notes), students must have a doctor's note. A student checked out before 11:30AM is considered absent unless they check back in.
Farley Elementary's Chronic Absenteeism rate is around 6%, which lower than our surrounding schools. However, when schools receive their Report Card scores, 15% of the total grade is based on the percentage of students who are Chronically Absent. We lost one point on our Report Card Grade. I would like to get that point back this year, which means our CA rate needs to be less than 3%.
Chronic Absenteeism is defined as a student missing 18 or more days for the school year, regardless of reason.
