Art Showcase Competition: Deadline May 31, 2026
The Maryland Center for School Safety student art contest (PREPARE 2026)
We want your imagination to lead the way!
This year's theme, "Future Ready Schools," invites young artists to dream big about what schools, culture, and security will look like in the future.
Use your artwork to depict futuristic classrooms, innovative safety tools, redesigned school spaces, new collaborative methods for students and teachers, or creative technologies that promote safety and support for everyone. You can also explore the evolution of human connection and how trusted adults help to shape strong school communities.
When creating your artwork, think about questions like:
What do you think schools and school safety will look like in the future?
What kinds of new tools or technologies help keep students connected, creative, and safe?
Do school buildings look the same, or have they transformed into something new?
How has technology changed how we move, learn, or communicate?
What does a positive school culture look like in the future?
Who are the trusted adults in future schools, and how do they support students?
Be bold, curious, and inventive as you show us what a Future Ready School looks like through your eyes.

Mental Health Awareness info for families
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and supporting the mental well-being of our students and families.
The following points are being shared with you to help normalize the topic of Mental Health and provide actionable tools for early intervention.
Common Warning Signs
You should watch for persistent changes (lasting two or more weeks) that disrupt your student's daily life:
- Emotional Shifts: Frequent irritability, extreme mood swings, or lasting sadness.
- Behavioral Changes: Withdrawal from friends, loss of interest in favorite activities, or "school refusal".
- Physical Indicators: Frequent headaches or stomach aches without a clear medical cause, or significant changes in sleep and appetite.
- Academic Impact: A sudden decline in grades or difficulty concentrating in class.
Daily "Wellness Wins" for Families
You are encouraged to use these simple habits to build emotional resilience at home:
- The "Big 5" Habits: Prioritize restorative sleep, physical activity, healthy eating, social connection, and helping others.
- Meaningful Check-ins: Use open-ended questions like "What was the best part of your day?" or "What made you feel nervous today?" to spark authentic conversation.
- Structure & Routine: Predictable daily schedules, especially consistent bedtimes and limited screen time, help reduce anxiety.
- Model Coping Skills: Let your student see you managing stress in healthy ways, such as taking a walk, deep breathing, or journaling.
Resources & Next Steps
Please know that you are not alone and have access to support:
- School Support: Reach out to your student’s school counselor or a teacher if you notice changes at home.
- Professional Guidance: Visit expert-led platforms like ParentGuidance.org or Child Mind Institute (childmind.org) for practical mental health tools.
- Crisis Support: Immediate help is available by calling or texting 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
