Important Message from AFSA's Executive Director

I want to take time to acknowledge the tragic event that took place on Wednesday, August 27th, 2025. As all of you know, A Minneapolis School endured a school shooting that took 2 lives and injured many others. I believe that most of you agree with me in saying we are sick of hearing of these terrible events taking place in our schools. My heart and thoughts go to everyone involved and for the lives lost.

At AFSA we take all measures to ensure the safety of our students and staff. We have strict procedures in place to make sure we know who is in our buildings at all times and all exterior doors are always locked. As a District we follow the Standard Response Protocol (see attachment) and practice this throughout the year. If you have any concerns or questions please reach out to me.

Weekly Words with Wakefield Weekly Words with Wakefield

It’s the last Friday before the start of the school year! I have had some moments of reflection during week 25 of Words With Wakefield. I will state the obvious because of the picture! I come from a family of educators. My mother was an educator for 25+ years, all of my grandparents retired as educators, and now my sister has officially become an educator. If you ask most educators why they got into the field of teaching it is because they were inspired by family members who were in the field of education.

My second reflection came this week when both of my children walked onto the bus to go to school. My son (1st grader) led his sister (Kindergartener) on the bus and sat with her to ease her nervousness. What made me happiest wasn’t the giving nature of my son making sure his sister was ok, even though that did make us as parents happy. It was how excited they were to go to school. Our goal as a school is to make a place where students want to come. I believe AFSA has created that environment!

I am honored to be a part of AFSA’s community and excited to lead AFSA in another school year. We have the best staff in place to make sure all of our students enjoy school and reach their full potential. I believe that AFSA goes beyond just educating students, we assure our students become leaders that have the tools to take on the challenges we face day in and day out! #challengeaccepted.

Busing Information Busing Information

As we kick off the school year, please make sure your student is at the bus stop 5 minutes before their pick up time and stays 10 minutes after their scheduled time as bus drivers may run late as everyone gets adjusted to the routes. Any students that do not ride the bus in the first 2 weeks and do not notify the school of their intention to ride the bus will be dropped from busing. After the first two weeks route times may be adjusted to allow for any changes.

Calling all 8th-12th graders! Join more than 1300 young leaders from around the state this January to debate the issues that are important to you. Youth in Government (YIG) is a hands-on civic learning program where students in grades 8-12 become legislators, lawyers, judges, lobbyists, journalists, or cabinet members and spend four days running a state model government. Young people in YIG aren’t spectators; they elect their own leaders, debate their own ideas, and support policies and laws that highlight their values.

The first student meeting for this year's YIG program is coming up September 9th. To learn more about YIG contact Ms. Nelson!
