Family Study Tips

Here are some simple ways you can help your child practice our current learning targets at home. A few minutes of practice each day can make a big difference!

Reading

Learning Target: I can explain how setting and conflict contribute to plot development.

Ask your child:

  • Where and when does the story take place?

  • What is the setting?

  • What problem or conflict does the character face?

  • How does the setting affect the problem?

  • How does the conflict change what happens in the story?

  • How is the conflict resolved?

At-home tip: While reading together, have your child identify the setting, conflict, important events, and resolution. Ask, “How did the setting or conflict help move the story forward?”

Writing

Learning Target: I can improve my writing by revising, editing, and building on personal ideas or the ideas of others.

Encourage your child to:

  • Add details to make their ideas clearer.

  • Replace repeated or simple words with stronger words.

  • Check for complete sentences.

  • Check capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.

  • Reread their writing and ask, “Does this make sense?”

  • Add ideas or details based on feedback from someone else.

At-home tip: Have your child write a short paragraph about something they enjoy. Then have them reread it and make at least 2 improvements.

Science

Learning Target: Changes in the Geosphere

Review how the Earth's surface can change over time.

Ask your child:

  • What is the geosphere?

  • What are some natural events that can change Earth's surface?

  • How can weathering and erosion change land?

  • How can water, wind, and ice change Earth's surface?

  • Can you think of an example of Earth's surface changing?

At-home tip: Look outside together and find examples of rocks, soil, landforms, erosion, or other changes to Earth's surface.

Social Studies

Learning Target: Contextualize the experiences of Africans, Europeans, and Native Americans in South Carolina.

Ask your child:

  • Who were the Native Americans living in South Carolina?

  • Why did Europeans come to South Carolina?

  • What experiences did Africans have in South Carolina?

  • How did these groups contribute to the history and development of South Carolina?

  • How were their experiences similar and different?

At-home tip: Encourage your child to explain what they know using the words Africans, Europeans, Native Americans, South Carolina, culture, experiences, and history.

Math

Learning Target: Numbers and Number Patterns

Please practice multiplication facts at home each day!

Practice:

  • Multiplication facts

  • Skip-counting patterns

  • Identifying patterns in numbers

  • Explaining how a pattern changes

  • Using multiplication to solve problems

At-home tip: Practice multiplication facts for 5–10 minutes each night. You can use flashcards, oral practice, dice, or have your child create their own multiplication problems.

Thank you for partnering with us at home! Encourage your child to read every night, practice multiplication facts, and explain their thinking. We appreciate everything you do to support your child's learning!

We believe in our students and know they can do amazing things!

Missing Assignments & NHI: A Quick Guide for Parents

  • What does NHI mean? NHI stands for "Not Handed In." This means your child has not turned in a required assignment.

  • How to determine what is missing: You can log into parent backpack to see which assignments are marked NHI. The assignment name, due date, and any related details will be listed there.

  • What happens if the assignment isn’t turned in: An NHI counts as a 50 in the gradebook until the work is submitted. Once your child completes and turns in the missing assignment, the grade will be updated. If the assignment is never turned in, the NHI will remain a 50, which may significantly impact your child’s overall grade.

  • Submissions to clear an NHI must be turned in to the teacher within 2 weeks of the original assignment date.

Reassessment Policy:

After a minor assignment is given, students who have not mastered the material will be offered the opportunity to analyze and reflect on their learning, and may request a reassessment. Chandler Creek teachers will reteach concepts students haven’t mastered, then reassess relevant parts of the assignment to promote a mastery of learning concepts prior to a major assessment. Requests for reassessment must be submitted within one week of the minor grade being posted.

Volunteers in the Classroom

School Visitor and Volunteer Guidelines

Greenville County Schools (GCS), in an effort to ensure the safety of all of our students, has implemented additional security checks for school volunteers. All volunteers must submit an online application to the district and receive clearance from the district before volunteering at any school/center or chaperoning any school field trip.

Volunteers are now identified by two different categories ~ Level I or Level II. The application is the same for level I and level II (you must be 18 or older to become a volunteer). Volunteer Application Form

LEVEL I - This level requires the presence and supervision of a GCS employee at all times. Level I volunteers must have a National Sex Offender Registry check conducted every time they volunteer at the school (this is the current process each time you check into a school and/or district office). Level I volunteers may volunteer in classrooms, work in the Media Center, and participate in school activities on campus as long as staff members are present. Level I volunteers must sign in each time they volunteer. Photo identification must be presented each time for verification.

LEVEL II –This level allows interaction with students without a GCS employee present. Level II volunteers must have a National Sex Offender Registry check conducted every time they volunteer at the school as well as a criminal background check good for three years. Chaperones for field trips are required to be a Level II volunteer, regardless of the destination (YOU MUST BE 21 or older TO BE A FIELD TRIP CHAPERONE) .

Additional information can be found at https://www.greenville.k12.sc.us/Parents/main.asp?titleid=volunteers
