Members of the Ripley-Union-Lewis-Huntington (RULH) FFA Chapter are enjoying an exciting and memorable experience at the 99th National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis, Indiana. The trip has provided students with opportunities to expand their agricultural knowledge, develop leadership skills, explore new places, and build lasting friendships with fellow FFA members. Mr. Daniel Foster (High School Agriculture) and Mr. Justin Cluxton (Junior High Agriculture) organized the trip.

Day One: Educational Tours, New Friendships, and Exciting Adventures

RULH FFA members began their journey by joining their new friends from Lynchburg-Clay FFA as they traveled toward Indianapolis to participate in the national convention.

Their first stop was the new Purina manufacturing plant in Batavia, Ohio, where students participated in an informative tour of the facility. Members learned about the various brands associated with Purina and gained valuable insight into how different types of animal food are manufactured. The experience provided students with a firsthand look at careers and operations within the agricultural industry.

Following the tour, the group enjoyed lunch at Golden Corral before visiting Great American Ball Park, home of the Cincinnati Reds. During their behind-the-scenes tour, students had the opportunity to explore the home team's dugout, step onto the field, and learn about the rich history and traditions of one of Major League Baseball's most historic franchises.

The excitement continued into the evening as members visited Adrenaline Adventure, where they spent time jumping, participating in activities, and strengthening friendships with fellow FFA members. The experience provided plenty of opportunities for laughter, teamwork, and unforgettable memories.

After an action-packed day, the group checked into their hotel and concluded the evening with a special bedtime story read by Mr. Foster, providing a memorable and entertaining ending to their first day.

Day Two: Leadership, Inspiration, and the National FFA Experience

The second day of the 99th National FFA Convention & Expo began with members attending the convention's first opening session. The session featured remarks from National FFA Advisor Dr. Travis Park, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins, and keynote speaker Scott McKain.

Each speaker delivered an inspiring message focused on leadership, overcoming hardships, and the importance of perseverance when pursuing personal and professional goals. Members were encouraged to remain determined, embrace challenges, and never give up on their dreams, even when faced with adversity.

Following the opening session, RULH FFA members explored the National FFA Trade Show and Expo. Students had the opportunity to visit exhibits, learn about agricultural businesses and organizations, shop for FFA merchandise, and interact with fellow members from across the country. The experience allowed students to gain additional knowledge about the agricultural industry while continuing to build new friendships.

After an exciting day at the convention, the group enjoyed dinner at BJ's before heading to the Buckeye Bash for an evening of entertainment and fellowship. At the Buckeye Bash, members participated in a variety of activities, including nine-square, jumping on the bounce pad, gathering around fires, and dancing throughout the evening. The event provided another opportunity for students to relax, have fun, and strengthen the friendships developed during their convention experience.

The day concluded with another entertaining bedtime story before members settled in for some much-needed rest.

An Experience Beyond the Classroom

The National FFA Convention & Expo provides students with opportunities that extend far beyond the traditional classroom. Through educational tours, leadership sessions, agricultural exhibits, and interactions with FFA members from other schools, students gain valuable experiences that help prepare them for future success.

For RULH FFA members, the first two days of the trip have been filled with learning, inspiration, friendship, and unforgettable memories.

As the convention continues toward its conclusion, members look forward to making the most of their remaining time in Indianapolis and bringing home new knowledge, experiences, and friendships.

RULH Local Schools is proud of its FFA members and their continued commitment to agricultural education, leadership development, and personal growth.

Students at RULH Elementary School enjoyed an exciting week of music education, exploring rhythm, composition, and cultural traditions through engaging, hands-on activities.

Fourth Through Sixth Graders Become Music Composers

Students in grades 4–6 had the opportunity to become composers during their music classes this week. Working with partners, students created their own original eight-beat rhythmic compositions using body percussion and rhythmic patterns they have been studying and practicing in class.

After completing their compositions, students presented their creations to their classmates. The entire class then performed each rhythm together, allowing students to experience the excitement of bringing their original musical ideas to life. The activity encouraged creativity, collaboration, and musical expression while reinforcing important concepts in rhythm and composition.

Third Graders Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month Through Traditional Mexican Dance

Meanwhile, RULH third-grade students celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by learning the traditional Mexican folk dance Los Machetes. Originating in Jalisco, Mexico, Los Machetes is a traditional folk dance that highlights elements of Mexican culture and heritage. Traditionally performed by both men and women, the dance features men demonstrating their skill and coordination through movements involving machetes, while women perform graceful movements in colorful, flowing skirts. The dance celebrates both strength and elegance through music and movement. Before learning the dance, students discussed its cultural origins, historical significance, and the traditions it represents.

For their classroom performance, students used rhythm sticks to safely recreate the movements traditionally performed with machetes. They danced to the traditional Los Machetes music performed by Mariachi Vargas, combining rhythm, coordination, and cultural appreciation into an engaging learning experience.

These activities provided RULH students with meaningful opportunities to develop their musical abilities, express their creativity, work collaboratively, and gain a greater appreciation for cultural traditions from around the world. RULH Local Schools – Together We Soar!
