SME - 1st Grade Fun

A lot of fun was had in first grade at SME on the 100th day of school! Students in the three classrooms rotated to each classroom where they completed a different 100th day activity! In one classroom, students did a gumball machine craft with 100 gumballs, while in another classroom they had to design a picture using the numbers 1-0-0. In the last rotation, students were in the gym doing activities 100 times, such as jumping rope, bouncing and shooting basketballs, hula hoops, and more!

1st graders in Mrs. Kane's class at SME did some yummy math for Valentine's Day! Students were given a box of candy hearts that they had to sort by color, tally the number of each color, and then create a graph! After they sorted their box of hearts, students were challenged to see if they could stack all of their candies to make a tower! Finally, the class played candy heart toss , a game created that is similar to cornhole!

NHS Seniors Recognized at School Board Meeting for Prestigious Community Awards

As previously reported, NHS seniors, Paige Sullivan and Faith Murray, have earned the highest award in Girl Scouting, the Girl Scout Gold Award, for the 2023 Gold Award class. The Gold Award process not only enables girls to help their communities, but also provides tangible benefits such as building professional skills, scholarship opportunities, network building, and monetary incentives for girls interested in joining the military.

Senior Elizabeth Anthony has earned her Stars and Stripes Award through American Heritage Girls. The goal of the Stars & Stripes Award is the experience and the realization of the servant’s heart that is needed to lead with integrity and humility. The award procedure and project benefit a candidate’s community and develop her skills in organization, communication, time management, and project management.

All three were recognized at the February School Board meeting. Congratulations Paige, Faith, and Elizabeth!

NMS THON

On Saturday, February 18, the NMS Mini-THON Leadership Team traveled to Penn State to be a part of THON, PSU’s 46-hour dance marathon. Students came back with enthusiasm and inspiration to ignite NMS Mini-THON 2023, which will be held in May. The Team danced and cheered and stood for six hours during the event. They returned ready to put their passion into action against childhood cancer. All proceeds from both THON and Mini-THONs benefit Four Diamonds, whose sole purpose is to conquer childhood cancer. In the last decade, NMS Mini-THON has raised over $450,000 in the fight. THON 2023 raised over $15 million!

NHS Class Trip to National Constitution Center

On Wednesday 3/1/23 Mrs. Wire and her 11th grade AP US Government and Politics class visited the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. At the National Constitution Center students were able to explore the Constitution through interactive displays which provide historical context and contemporary application. Students were able to view and read artifacts written by the Framers of the Constitution, watch the program “Freedom Rising” which set the stage for the student’s experience at the center, and then explore the immersive feature exhibits that bring the Constitution to life. A special thank you to Susan Reinaman for chaperoning.

The Polar Bear Foundation Presents a BIG Check!

On Tuesday, February 28th the Polar Bear Foundation proudly presented the Northern York County School Board with a check for $403,134.77 to fund Lobar Inc. Field, the district’s new state of the art, turf athletic field. In addition to this check, the Foundation expressed gratitude to various businesses including Lobar Inc., Pennsy Supply, Crabtree Rohrbaugh Associates, and Remcon for in-kind donations towards this project. The Foundation worked to facilitate a grant- in partnership with Representative Dawn Keefer and Senator Mike Regan for improvements at Bostic Field and new construction at Lobar Inc. Field. Through these combined efforts, the Foundation was able to directly, and indirectly, raise about $1.4 Million for this project.

The construction of Lobar Inc. Field allows for Northern’s athletic programs to host a variety of events they previously were not able to host, including playoff games. All of these efforts are the culmination of over five years of work by the Foundation, the Turf Field Committee, and the district administration. This project is proof of the power a community can have when it comes together for a common effort. In the famous words of the voice of Northern, “It’s a great day to be a Polar Bear!”

This Spring, come out to Lobar Inc Field to watch Boys and Girls Lacrosse compete on the turf field.
