Update on Strategic Planning

We are making progress! We received more than 350 responses to the online strategic planning survey from Lighthouse Counsel. Thank you! More than 250 parents responded as well as grandparents, faculty, staff, alumni, trustees, community leaders, and high school student leaders. Survey results are being tabulated, and we will share a topline summary with the broader community in the coming weeks.

The strategic planning committee has been meeting this winter to review the survey results as well as our existing mission statement and core values. To no one’s surprise, several themes were clear as to what is important to our families:

· A genuine family-oriented school that values parental involvement

· Academic rigor, excellence, and 100% college acceptance

· Excellent teachers and coaches who care about children

· High standards for student character and behavior

· Development of the whole child, academically, athletically and artistically

· Christian values

· Longstanding school traditions, balanced with a growing commitment to innovative teaching and programming

· Winter Term, work internships, and international travel experiences

· Supporting students at all levels of ability, especially in the PARC

The planning committee looks forward to sharing more in the coming weeks. Thanks to those of you who completed the survey and shared your valuable insights!

Sincerely,

John D. Marshall

Learning to Fly

This semester, George Walton Academy introduced a new class on programming drones. While students can purchase drones online or in shops, these drones require programming. Students are learning how to use Python to program the drone and learn about the basics of flight. Early classes cover the basics of flight and controlling the altitude of their drone through code. Each aspect of flight has to be programmed, such as lift-off, hover, roll, pitch, and yaw. If one portion is not programmed, it could lead to a lousy flight or even a crash.

Once students master the basics of flight control, they will begin programming maneuvers with the drone. Students must go through a flight checklist daily before starting on the daily challenges. The flying of the drones is the payoff for writing good code; without the code, the drone would be another toy, not a programmed drone performing tasks and actions that each student has created by writing their own code.

Watch It Burn

GWA Forensic students completed a fiber burn analysis lab to learn how to differentiate between natural fibers (cotton, hemp, wool, silk) and synthetic fibers (polyester, nylon, rayon, acrylic) based on burn characteristics. The lab concepts include recognizing how different fibers react to heat and flame, observing chemical properties like melting, charring and ash formation, and noting odors produced during combustion which indicate organic vs. synthetic origin of fibers. Students also learned how forensic scientists use fibers to solve crimes.

Behind the Scenes at the Benz

Students in Mrs. Beam's sixth-grade math classes recently had the opportunity to visit Mercedes- Benz Stadium for an educational field trip. The students were given an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour to see how the stadium functions daily.

During the tour, students were able to explore the locker rooms used by the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United players, as well as step onto the field itself. They were provided with valuable information about how STEAM elements play a crucial role in the operation of the stadium, and how various careers intersect with the sports and entertainment industry.

Additionally, students learned about the building design and engineering aspects of the stadium, as well as its sustainability initiatives. They received information on sports and nutrition, had the opportunity to view the MBS Art Collection, and explore the MBS Urban Garden.

Overall, this field trip provided students with a unique and engaging opportunity to learn about the inner workings of a major sports venue and how various disciplines come together to create an unforgettable experience for fans.

Community Collaboration

George Walton Academy's Interact Club and the Rotary Club of Monroe shared their annual accomplishments and vision for the future at their joint meeting in the Learning Center. During lunch, provided by the Rotary Club, Interact leaders Emerson Sheldon, Moneli Shekarbakht, and Isabel Choe discussed the success of their annual Operation Christmas Child project and their collaboration with the Rotary Club at events like a fall pickleball tournament and the annual Daddy-Daughter Dance this month. Additionally, at the meeting, Kade Franklin shared his experience as our Rotary Youth Leader at the annual RYLA camp, where he developed team-building and leadership skills while connecting with other youth leaders.

Opportunity for 2026

Interested rising eighth graders will have the opportunity to participate in our exchange program next year. Host students from Spain (St. Paul’s School Barcelona) are eager to be a part of GWA student and family life and they hope to join us in the fall. In turn, participating GWA students will travel to Spain to live with partnered host families and attend St. Paul’s in March 2026.

To learn more, please email Mrs. McElveen at amcelveen@gwa.com or stop by to see her in the Upper School PARC.

Gallery of Gratitude

Artists in fourth grade are taking inspiration from artist Kehinde Wiley to create amazing portraits of all of the lower school teachers! Each student has chosen a teacher and created a contour line drawing of them, painting the background, and using patterned scrapbook paper to complete their artwork. These are mounted and on display in a "Gallery of Gratitude" on the second/third grade hall! Come on by and see if you recognize your favorite teachers!
