Community Update October 20, 2023

Dear Syosset Community:

Our Board recognized our 35 National Merit Scholar Semifinalists and continued its discussions about facilities at a Special Meeting this past Wednesday. We continue our ongoing conversations about improving our aging facilities, keeping our academic program current, and addressing enrollment growth at some of our buildings. You can view my presentation on our website.

Although the annual Pep Rally was canceled, today’s weather hasn’t dampened Syo’s Spirit Week celebrations. On Monday, students held the annual school-wide Walk-a-thon to raise money for the cancer charity, Relay for Life. Wednesday was “Country-Western” OR “Country Club” Day - and I just love seeing our kids horsing around (thank you Carly, Sophie & Talia for making me smile). Apparently the horseplay reached all the way to Berry Hill Elementary, where Mr. Lertora saddled up for their “Howdy PARPner!”-themed PARP week.

Yesterday was our Annual Health Fair, which is always a great opportunity to focus on the amazing clubs and resources our school has to offer to keep students healthy in both mind and body.

Our Carnival kicked off this afternoon. It will run until 11pm tonight, from noon to 11pm Saturday, and from noon to 5pm on Sunday. If there are any changes due to weather, we will let you know via email. Our football team is gearing up for the Homecoming game tomorrow afternoon at 3 pm. The new turf field will save us from playing a mud-bowl, so I will be there to cheer on the team, rain or shine.

Newsday released its rankings of the top 25 girls swimmers and divers this season – and we’re delighted to congratulate Senior Megan Hu for making the list! She placed first in the county last year in the 100 meter breaststroke, and in the state championship, she finished 20th in the 200 meter individual medley. We can’t wait to see her accomplishments this season. Way to go, Megan!

Congrats to Syosset Tennis for yesterday’s quarterfinal playoff win! Our tennis program is showing up #SyoStrong this year with the extraordinary accomplishment of both the Varsity and JV teams finishing the regular season undefeated – a combined 25-0 record! Syosset will host No. 4 Great Neck South in the semifinals at 3pm. on Monday.

Members of our Rowing team are shipping out to Boston to compete in the “Head of the Charles” regatta this weekend. This is one of the most prestigious races of the year – attracting rowers from across the globe. It is an invitation-only race – and five of Syosset’s boats, 11 of our rowers, were invited this year. Good luck team – make a big splash for Syo!

Spotlight on Instruction 🔦

Our third graders are learning how wide our world is with exciting geography lessons.

At Baylis, classes have been weaving together their Science, Social Studies, Literacy, and Math units by studying the connections between geography and weather across the United States. Each third grade meteorologist is tracking the high and low temperatures and weather patterns daily for one capital city in America. Our social scientists are inferring which geographical features impact the temperatures as well as the rain, snow, and wind. They are also acting as mathematicians to convert their weather data into picture graphs, line plots, and bar graphs while also practicing their estimation and rounding skills.

At Robbins Lane, students are learning to understand the difference between cities, states, countries, and continents. They are learning to understand where Syosset actually is on a map – and why people choose to live in certain places and not others. Students then researched different countries around the world and created informative posters to present to their classmates. After all, it’s a big world – and learning is better as a team!

Usually you get accepted to college, then figure out how to pay for it. But Senior Griffin Hon has managed to do things in reverse! Griffin has been awarded the Coolidge Scholarship by the President Calvin Coolidge Foundation – a full-ride presidential scholarship that covers a student’s tuition, room, board, and expenses for four years of undergraduate study – even though he hasn’t finished college applications yet. Griffin was selected based on his outstanding academic achievements, including his biomedical research, leadership of the HOSA (Health Occupations) and Quiz Bowl clubs, and local charity work. I first met Griffin when he served on my 5th grade Student Cabinet and he’s been impressing me ever since. Congratulations, Griffin!

The Long Island Arts Alliance is recognizing three Syosset Seniors for their amazing artistic achievements. Scout Chen (Media Arts) and Priscilla Pan (Dance) have both been named Scholar Artists, and Ruby Zhang (Visual Arts) has received an Award of Merit. These prestigious distinctions are only given to 40 student artists across Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

The goal of the LIAA Scholar-Artist Program is to showcase high school seniors who are exceptionally accomplished across five disciplines: Visual Arts, Music, Theater, Dance, and Media Arts. The artistic range of the students selected for this honor highlights the depth and breadth of Syosset’s Fine and Performing Arts program.

Congratulations Scout, Priscilla, and Ruby on this amazing accomplishment!

Bright Spot

Two of our Syosset Stars were literally among the stars!

Junior Misbah Iqbal is the President of our high school’s chapter of Bring Change To Mind (BC2M), which is advised by social worker Lauren O’Rourke, LCSW. The mission of the club is to raise awareness about mental health – and to share resources with students that help them manage the stresses of everyday life.

This club has had an amazing impact on our school community – and the national organization took notice. Misbah and Ms. O’Rourke were invited to attend the organization’s annual gala, which was hosted by Glenn Close and attended by the likes of Whoopi Goldberg, Reba McEntire and Ryan Reynolds (who was also honored with the Robin Williams Legacy of Laughter Award). The evening included inspirational stories of destigmatizing mental health and the importance of seeking out support when you need it. As a passionate mental health advocate, Misbah joined other BC2M student leaders on stage to help promote this incredible cause.

Though I think Misbah is a star, I can’t blame her for feeling a little star-struck by Ryan Reynolds. The event was a huge success, raising nearly $400,000 for teen mental health.

We hope you’ll stop by our High School this weekend for a spin around the carnival, or to cheer for the team as they take on Oceanside. Have a great weekend!
