Shark BytesWeekly Community Updates - August 15

Dear Students and Families,

I hope every student had a fantastic first full week of school! Today was our Welcome Back Rally. Students cheered, danced and showed lots of energy to start the school year off.

Mark your calendars for two important upcoming dates: Wednesday, September 10 is a Staff Development Day—students do not attend school on this day. Thursday, September 18 is Back to School Night. At Oceana, we traditionally hold this event later than other schools to give our freshmen time to prepare and present their Freshmen Orientation Project that evening. All of these dates can be found on our Oceana Calendar.

Students and families have access to view students' classes and grades on ParentVUE and StudentVUE. This is the place to view students' attendance, grades, course history, locker information and more. If you haven't yet, get familiar with ParentVUE and reach out to a counselor if you have any questions.

I hope you all have a nice weekend!

Take care,

Maritza Torres

Cell Phone Policy

Cell phones are a major distraction from learning and socializing in schools. Our school policy is that devices are stored off and in a place that is not visible for the duration of each class time, including walking to and from the bathroom, library or counseling hall during their class time. Staff members have the option of requisitioning the device and turning it over to the front office. The student can retrieve their device at the end of the school day. If a student repeatedly fails to adhere to this policy, they should expect to turn in their device into the office every morning.

New Policy - Clearing Tardies/Absences

If a student has been mistakenly marked tardy or absent by their teacher, please have them visit the attendance clerk, Jesse, in the attendance office.

Students can request a “Clear Sheet” to take to their teacher. If the teacher confirms the error, they can sign the "Clear Sheet". The student must then return the signed sheet to Jesse, who will update the correct attendance code. Oceana's new policy is that students have two weeks to complete this process from the date of the absence or tardy.

Seniors who are interested in dropping classes for the spring semester will need to stay on top of their attendance and clear any issues that may arise in a timely manner.
