Miners in the Middle
October 6, 2025

Principal's Message
It’s a short but important week here at Hartshorne Middle School! Midterm exams are Tuesday and Wednesday, and remember — midterms count as 10% of your overall grade. There will be no school on Friday for students (staff work day). Next week is even shorter — no school Wednesday due to Parent/Teacher Conferences (8:00–12:00), and Fall Break on Thursday and Friday.
Tonight’s Middle School Football Game will be a combined 7th/8th grade game at home starting at 5:30, followed by an extra quarter for our 6th/7th graders. Come out and cheer on our Miners!
We’re also wrapping up our initial assessments in the new Amira reading program this week. This program is helping us identify each student’s strengths and needs so we can create individual reading paths and goals. It’s a really neat tool — ask your child to tell you about it!
Student Council and Class Officer Elections will take place this Thursday. Students who submitted applications and were approved to run have been notified. If you or your child are unsure or have questions, please don’t hesitate to ask in the office.
We’re excited to build student leaders through this process — students who will have a voice in shaping our school and setting a positive example for their peers.
As we move through these next couple of busy weeks, I want to remind everyone of our school motto:
Respect Yourself. Respect Others. Respect Our School.
Respect is a big word that can mean many things — but at its heart, it’s simple: treat others the way you want to be treated, take pride in your actions, and care for the place and people around you. When we do that, everyone benefits.
Let’s finish this short week strong, Miners! 💙

HMS Building-Wide Expectations
Classroom Expectations
These are our school-wide expectations for our students. Positive behavior fosters an environment where ALL students can learn and grow. It is our hope that our HMS families will discuss our school-wide behavior expectations and encourage positive behaviors at school and home.
Common Areas Expectations
Our school-wide expectations extend beyond the classroom. It is important that students also realize they are accountable for their behaviors in the hallway, cafeteria and at all school sponsored activities on and off campus.
OSSAA has teamed up with COUNTRY Financial to launch the Gridiron Giveaway! This is our school’s chance to win a donation that will be presented live at the OSSAA State Football Championships, presented by COUNTRY Financial this fall. All you need to do is submit your information and give our school the opportunity to bring home the prize.

Tips for a Successful School Year
To help you start strong, here are a few simple ways to set yourself up for success:
-
Be organized: Use your planner daily to keep track of assignments, projects, and important dates.
- Ask for Help Early: If something doesn’t make sense, don’t wait until you’re behind — talk to your teacher or counselor right away.
- Use Your Time Wisely: Stay focused during class, and finish your homework daily.
- Be present: Attendance matters! Being here every day helps you keep up and feel confident.
-
Get involved: Join a club, sport, or activity to make friends and try new things.
-
Be respectful: Kindness and good behavior make our school a great place to learn. A good attitude goes a long way!
Rest Well: Aim for at least 8 hours of sleep — and put those phones away at night so you’re ready to learn each morning!
LOCKER TIPS FOR A SMOOTH YEAR
Lockers are a middle school tradition—but they can be tricky at first!
-
Don’t overstuff it – Only keep what you need for the day.
-
Use shelves or organizers to make extra space.
-
Practice your combination until it’s second nature.
-
Avoid storing food—trust me, it will start to smell!
-
Do a weekly clean-out so you can always find what you need.
