Superintendent's Update

September 11, 2026

Superintendent'sUpdateSeptember 11, 2026

Dear CCPS Families,

What a fantastic start to the school year! As we wrap up our first two weeks, I want to thank our students, staff, and families for bringing such incredible energy back to our classrooms. Our fall athletic competitions are officially underway, and it's been wonderful to see our community come out to support our student-athletes.

As we reflect on these busy first two weeks, we also pause as a community to honor the solemn observance of the 25th anniversary of September 11th. We remember the thousands of innocent lives lost, honor the incredible courage of our first responders, and pay tribute to the spirit of unity and resilience that defines our nation. This is a time to teach our students the importance of service, bravery, and coming together to support one another.

Next week, we are excited to celebrate our nation's history, civics, and future with a district-wide Spirit Week honoring America’s 250th anniversary and Constitution and Citizenship Day! We encourage all students, staff, and families to join in the fun as we mark this special occasion together. Be sure to check out the graphic below for details on each day's theme.

Finally, I had the privilege of taking part in a very special celebration earlier today at Elkton High School. Alongside our leadership team, school administration, and students, we joined representatives from Hertrich Automotive to surprise our CCPS Teacher of the Year, K. Nicole Walker, with a brand-new vehicle!

This marks the eighth consecutive year that Hertrich Automotive has generously partnered with CCPS to sponsor a vehicle for our Teacher of the Year. We are deeply grateful for their continued commitment to recognizing and uplifting our exceptional local educators. Please join me in congratulating Ms. Walker once again for her outstanding dedication to excellence in the classroom.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support as we kick off another great year in Cecil County Public Schools.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey A. Lawson, Ed.D.

As part of an annual routine requirement enacted by Maryland law (2024 Chapter 182), the Maryland Center for School Safety (MCSS) has provided local school systems with model content to share with all families at the beginning of each school year.

This informative outreach is sent statewide to help keep our communities safe. Attached you will find MCSS's “A Parent’s Guide to Firearm Storage” bulletin (in English and Spanish).

Important School Immunization Requirements for CCPS Families

As we prepare for the upcoming school year, Cecil County Public Schools (CCPS) reminds all families to ensure their students' immunization records are completely up to date before the first day of school.

Elementary School Requirements (Grades K–5)

Under Maryland law, all elementary students must have proof of the following standard immunizations:

  • DTaP / DTP / DT: 4–5 doses

  • Polio: 3–4 doses

  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): 2 doses

  • Varicella (Chickenpox): 2 doses

  • Hepatitis B: 3 doses

Incoming 7th Grade Families — Action Required

Maryland state law requires all students entering 7th grade to have proof of two specific updated boosters before school begins:

  • Tdap booster (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis)

  • Meningococcal vaccine (MCV4)

Need an Appointment?

We recommend contacting your child’s primary care physician as soon as possible to review their records and schedule any needed shots.

If you need an alternative, the Cecil County Health Department offers required school immunizations:

  • Clinics: Immunization clinics begin in August (by appointment).

  • Schedule: Call 410-996-5100 or check the attached flyer for details.

NEHS community members, families, staff, and former alumni are invited to purchase a special “End of an Era” commemorative T-shirt as we celebrate NEHS's history, memories, and traditions.

This shirt is a great way to honor the many years of memories made within the walls of NEHS and to have a keepsake as we prepare to close this chapter in our school’s history and move to the new NEHS/MS building for Fall 2027.
