Welcome Back!
It has been wonderful week welcoming our students back from winter break! We know that returning from break and getting back into the school schedule can be a challenge; we understand that students may be a bit more tired for the first couple of weeks. As we get back into our learning, we will be supporting the students by reviewing the routines, schedules, and expectations of the classroom and school.
We have many things to look forward to this month and for the rest of the school year! Please take a few minutes to enjoy the information and announcements in this newsletter.

Join Alaska Strong: Atauchikun
Alaska Strong Atauchikun ("togetherness") is an after-school program for ANCCS families!
Atauchikun is an activity-based program to promote positive family experiences for parents and their children. In each six-week cohort, we will provide culturally-themed workshops and field trips. Our program offers a range of benefits for participants, including gift card incentives designed to encourage active engagement. Also, free lunches or dinners will be provided at each event.
Atauchikun is a great way to enjoy time with your family, engage in cultural activities and community events, and make connections with other ANCCS families. If you are interested in joining Atauchikun, please reach out to seetomona_shawn@asdk12.org or call the front office.
Tickets on sale now for Brick by Brick
Our major fundraising event of the year is coming up on Saturday, May 4, from 6:30 - 10:00 pm!
This wonderful gala event is a great way to celebrate ANCCS and connect with other ANCCS families and supporters. All proceeds from this event go to our 501(c)3 nonprofit, Friends of ANCCS, in support of funding a permanent building and home for ANCCS. For more information, check out: https://www.friends-of-anccs.com/.
Community members have the opportunity to purchase individual tickets for $80.00 or a table (seats 8 people) for $600.00. This event includes live entertainment, a silent and live auction, appetizers and drinks.
Badminton at ANCCS
ANCCS Badminton is getting in the swing again this month for grades 3 - 8! We have some fun events planned and players will get an ANCCS Badminton Team shirt!
ANCCS will host matches with Bowman Elementary and Chugach Optional Elementary Schools. There is also a field trip being planned to Colony Middle School in the valley.
Beginning January 23rd through February 28, Badminton Club will be on Tuesdays. After February 28, Badminton Club will switch to Wednesdays through April 10.
Badminton Academy will be on Saturdays starting January 27 from 10:00am - 12:00pm (except for the weekends before and after Spring Break)! This program will run through March 30. The Academy is limited to 20 players and will focus on building competitive skills.
Players may choose the Club or the Academy... or they may choose both. There is a fee of $20 to help cover the costs of the Badminton Team shirts and the playing events planned.
Permission forms and information is being sent home with interested students or may be picked up in the front office. Please direct any questions to Mrs. Ward.
Kids Heart Challenge
Dear ANCCS Families - Our Kids Heart Challenge program is kicking off in January! We are proud to support the American Heart Association! Students will learn how to keep their hearts happy and healthy through physical and mental well-being… Our goal is to have 100% of our school families join the team and learn Hands-Only CPR through Finn’s Mission.
Don’t wait, get started TODAY!
Students who join the team early will get recognized at our kick-off Assembly Jan. 16th!
REGISTER at www.heart.org/schools or download the Kids Heart Challenge App
2. COMPLETE FINN’S MISSION in your HQ to learn Hands-Only CPR, how to spot a stroke F.A.S.T., and how you can help kids with special hearts!
Attendance Update
Our attendance rate took a dip during the month of December with only 59% of students attending school 90% of the time or more. There were 15 school days in December, which means that students could not miss more than 1.5 school days in order to stay on track for 90% attendance.
As we return to school in this new year, we ask that families make a plan to ensure their students do not miss more than 10% of school each month so that every student can achieve 90% attendance. For the month of January, there are 16 school days. For your child to attend school 90% of the time, they cannot miss more than 1.5 school days this month. Let's work together to bring our 90% attendance rate back up to 83% or higher!
Wellness Initiative
In December, we sent home letters regarding an Elementary School Wellness Initiative. Students who sign up for this study can receive up to $100. This is a research study to help Anchorage School District (ASD) learn more about a Wellness Initiative with longer lunch periods, longer recess, and more movement breaks during the school day. Not all schools in Anchorage are currently part of the Wellness Initiative, but all elementary students can be in the study. You can sign up for the study at https://redcap.link/ne0yv1cp.
While the daylight is getting longer, the temperatures remain cold. Please ensure that your student brings a warm coat, snow pants, boots, a hat, and gloves or mittens to school every day. We will have winter gear to give away at our Family Night on January 25 if your student is ready for a size up or replacement!
Activities from our Instructional Coach!
High Frequency Word Fun!
High frequency words are words that appear most often in written text. Fluent readers have a large repertoire of high frequency word knowledge. Here are a few ways to practice high frequency words at home. Use your child's weekly high frequency word list or ask your child's teacher for a word list.
1. Magnetic Letters: use magnetic letters to spell high frequency words on the refrigerator or any magnetic surface, then practice reading them.
2. Fridge Flash: tape high frequency words to the refrigerator, practice reading them every time you're in the kitchen.
3. Snowball Fight: write high frequency words on white scrap paper or index cards. Crumple the words into a ball and HAVE A SNOWBALL FIGHT! Pick up the snowballs and see how many you can read.
4. Word Swat: put high frequency word cards on a table, call out a word and have your child swat it with a fly swatter or their hand.
