Notable Notes
CSCI Parent & Family Survey
In order to more accurately measure the school climate in each of our buildings, all six District 39 schools will be administering a school climate survey over the coming weeks. This is a unique and exciting opportunity for us to reach out to all members of our learning community to solicit their feedback. For the past two years, we have administered the Comprehensive School Climate Inventory (CSCI), as it is a student-centered tool that better matches our school’s focus and work and allows for actionable data based upon responses. We are excited to use the CSCI again this year as we continue to assess the culture and climate in our buildings.
Students in grades 3-8 will complete this survey in class before our survey window closes on March 10. All responses from both students and families are completely anonymous (no names, email addresses, or personal identifying information is used). However, if you wish to opt your child out of participating in this survey, please notify your student's classroom teacher by Monday, February 9.
I encourage all of you to find time to complete this survey to help us with this important work. Respondents may skip questions in which they are uncertain or uncomfortable in answering. The survey will take between 15-20 minutes to complete and please complete one survey per household for EACH of your children. Should you have multiple children at the same school, it is recommended that you take the survey for each child, as you may have different experiences for each.
You can access the Highcrest Middle School survey through this link: https://rezed.io/1PW40Y
We ask that you please complete your survey(s) by February 23. Thank you for your partnership and support of Highcrest and we look forward to sharing this data with our learning community later this spring.

D39 Updates
Registration for the 2026-27 Academic Year
Registration for the 2026-27 school year remains open! ALL students, including those already attending D39 schools, must register for the 2026-27 academic year. If you have not already, we encourage families to please register your child(ren) as soon as possible. Early registration helps us plan for class placement and staffing, and ensure we are able to hire the very best teachers around!
For returning students, visit the PowerSchool Parent Portal, click on the registration link, and follow the instructions.
For students new to D39, visit wilmette39.org/enroll for instructions on the new student registration process.
Strategic Plan Focus Group Opportunities
As District 39 begins the process to develop our next multi-year strategic plan, gathering input from various stakeholder groups, including our families and community members, is an important step. Your perspective and input will play an important role in charting the path for District 39 over the next five years.
To assist us in our work, parents, caregivers, and community members are invited to participate in one of two focus groups:
An afternoon focus group on Thursday, February 19 from 1:30-2:45 pm; OR
An evening focus group on Thursday, February 19 from 7:00-8:30 pm
Both focus groups will be held at the Mikaelian Education Center (615 Locust Rd.). Interested participants are asked to register online to secure your free electronic ticket (afternoon session | evening session).
No preparation is needed for this focus group; just a willingness to share your valuable feedback and perspective as well as an eagerness to participate in this important planning process. Thank you in advance for your partnership, support, and input.
Return from Illness Protocol
As we approach the peak of flu, strep and cold season, we are sharing some reminders to help keep our students and staff healthy. When children are sick, we request that they stay home in order to get well and prevent spreading illness to others.
A child should stay home if they:
Have a fever of 100.4 or higher
Have vomited
Have diarrhea
Have a persistent cough that is disruptive or makes it hard to breathe
Have a sore throat accompanied by a fever or rash (indicators of strep)
Children should remain home and not return to school until they have been fever-free without fever-reducing medication (Tylenol, Motrin), vomiting, or diarrhea for 24 hours.
Please contact your school nurse if you are having trouble deciding on whether your child’s symptoms require that they be kept home from school. By working together, we can all help our community stay healthy and safe.

The District 39 Educational Foundation is Looking for Trustees!
The D39 Educational Foundation is seeking enthusiastic and committed volunteers to serve on the Foundation’s Board of Trustees for the 2026-2027 school year and beyond. Trustees will serve a three-year term and collaborate closely with teachers, staff, and community members to fund transformative educational opportunities (such as ClassVR, the HMS Living Wall, Logitech Crayons, and elementary school murals) and organize engaging fundraising and community events (such as College Paddle Night, Family Bingo, and Trivia Night). The Board meets monthly during the school year and offers several social events to help build strong relationships among this dedicated team. Interested? We’d love to hear from you! Please contact Summer Kays by April 1 for more information.
Highcrest Helpful Hints
Revised Winter Arrival Procedures
Our Extended Carline during arrival seems to be working really well! Some might say too well! To help with this overcorrection, we've consolidated the timeline:
- 8:20 - 8:37: Typical Carline with students using the Playground Entrance
- 8:38 - 8:45: Extended Carline with student using the Athletic Entrance
- 8:45+: Front Office Arrival, by way of the circle drive.
Our HMS Winter Toolkit reflects these revisions!
Hawk Headlines will be sent weekly on Fridays!
