What's Happening at Western?
9/25/2026
Dear Western Families,
Today, Friday, September 25th, marks a very special milestone as we celebrate Greenwich Alliance Day and the 20th anniversary of the Greenwich Alliance for Education!
The Greenwich Alliance is a vital partner to Greenwich Public Schools, opening doors for thousands of students each year by funding innovative programs in the arts, STEM, college and career readiness, mental health, and academic enrichment. Over the past 20 years, the Alliance has invested $6.9 million into GPS, and Western Middle School alone has directly benefited from 21 Reaching Out Grants totaling over $428,000. These grants have funded key initiatives like our AVID program, Robotics, Science Bowl teams, VR technology, and the Developing Artist Program.
As part of the 20th anniversary celebrations today, our WMS students participated in a special district-wide art project during Flex time. Each student created a small, unique piece of artwork. These individual pieces will be joined with artwork from all three middle schools, the elementary schools, and Greenwich High School to build a massive, one-of-a-kind mosaic column—a literal representation that we are all "better together." Once completed, this masterpiece will be displayed around town for our entire community to enjoy!
To learn more about the Greenwich Alliance or to get involved with upcoming events like the annual Turkey Trot (Nov. 28) and Trivia Challenge (Feb. 26), please visit www.greenwichalliance.org.
Warmly,
Matthew Laskowski
Principal, Western Middle School

Battle of the Books
The Greenwich Middle Schools will be hosting their first Battle of the Books competition this year... if you have a kiddo who wants to read, talk great books AND has a little competitive streak, encourage them to sign up for this unique opportunity (especially if they participated in BoB in 5th grade!).
Everything you need to know is posted on the LMC website; please check it out and support our readers!
Notes from the Office
- Attendance Line: If your child will be absent or arrive at school late, please call the Attendance Line at 203-531-5678 by 9:00am and leave a message with his/her name, grade, and the reason for their absence.
AVID News
All students will use Flex Time at the mid-quarter and end-of-quarter marks to complete their progress monitoring sheet, which is located in their planners. During this time, students will review Aspen and document their grades for each course, as well as whether they have any missing assignments. They will reflect on what is going well for them academically, identify areas for growth, and set small goals for the remainder of the quarter.
Sixth graders completed their progress monitoring today, and seventh and eighth graders will complete their progress monitoring next Friday (10/2).
Please ask your child to show you their progress monitoring sheet in their planner and have a conversation with them about how Quarter 1 is going so far.
Athletics
Western started our fall season with Boys B Soccer beating GCDS 6-1! Our Volleyball, Field Hockey, and Girls soccer will all be in action next week. Please come by a game and support Western!
