Leading with Excellence

Dear College Park Families,

At College Park Elementary, our theme this year is Leading with Excellence. We began the year with our Strong Start Extravaganza, and I am proud to share that all students from Pre-K through 5th grade have now participated in this exciting kickoff.

This week, our Strong Start Wildly Important Goal (WIG) is focused on building strong learning habits in the classroom.

  • Grades 3–5: Students are practicing how to sit up in class and track the speaker—whether that’s their teacher or a classmate. This helps them follow clear three-step directions and stay engaged in learning.

  • Grades Pre-K–2: Students are learning the nonverbal cues for “Level Zero,” which means zero in voice and body, sIt up and tracking the speaker. Teachers are focusing on clear one-step directions and ensuring that all students are included in learning while using supportive corrections when needed.

These early weeks are about practicing the steps that create a focused, positive learning environment. By teaching these habits now, we are setting the foundation for excellence all year long.

How you can support at home:

  • For Pre-K–2 students, practice giving your child a simple one-step direction, such as: “Please put your shoes by the door.” Encourage them to follow right away with a quiet body and voice.

  • For Grades 3–5 students, try giving a two- or three-step direction, such as: “Bring your homework folder to the table, sit up, and tell me one thing you learned today.” This mirrors what they are practicing in class.

Each week, we will share more ways you can support our engagement practices at home. Together, we will ensure that every child feels included in learning and every classroom reflects excellence.

Thank you for your partnership and for helping us build a strong start!

With Excellence👑,

Dr. Maisha N. Otway

Principal, College Park Elementary School

This Week’s Leadership in Me Focus

This week’s Leadership in Me article is “Seven Ways Parents Can Help Support Leadership in Me at Home.” One way is to model the 7 Habits in everyday life—for example, showing your child how you plan ahead (Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind) or how you work together as a family (Habit 6: Synergize). Practicing these habits at home helps reinforce the leadership skills students are learning at school.
