by Ayrin Thibault, WCS Assistant Principal

This week, staff and administration had a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our incredible bus drivers and reflect on "the school bus experience." Our conversation focused on the value of connection and the lasting impact made each morning the moment a bus pulls up and the doors slide open. With a warm smile, a wave, a fist bump, or a friendly hello, our drivers build community and foster a sense of belonging at every stop.

For other students, the day begins with a car ride filled with music and conversation, or a walk or bike ride with friends through the natural beauty of Vermont. Once everyone arrives, those connections continue as our community gathers for breakfast in the lobby before heading to class—turning every small moment into an opportunity to notice one another and strengthen our sense of community.

Let’s take a moment to pause and reflect: How much can happen in just six seconds?

Who crossed your path, and how did they make you feel? Perhaps someone greeted you with a cheerful “good morning,” shared a quick wave, or offered a warm smile. What was the impact of that simple moment of recognition? On the flip side, we’ve all experienced times when someone’s tone or body language left a heavier impression. These brief interactions might seem minor, but in just six seconds, we can experience a surprisingly wide range of emotions.

This year, our school is focusing on "The First Six," an approach that starts with the first 6 seconds of an interaction and builds across the first 6 minutes, 6 days, 6 weeks, and 6 months. It all begins with those initial 6 seconds of each interaction throughout the day. These brief moments help us feel noticed, welcomed, and valued. We invite our entire community to explore these everyday interactions and reflect on how a tiny moment can shape the trajectory of an entire day.

What might happen if we pay close attention to those first six seconds? How might a smile, a kind greeting, or a moment of genuine presence change someone’s day, and what might we learn about ourselves along the way?

These moments are small, but the ripple effect is deeply meaningful. As we continue to care for one another this year, let’s explore the impact of our everyday interactions together, remembering that sometimes, six seconds is all it takes to help someone feel like they truly belong. We are an innovative and thriving community focused on personal and collective growth and belonging for all.

Wanted: People looking to make a difference

A new school year at Williston Central School is underway, and you can feel the energy and excitement in the building the moment you walk through the doors. What would add to the positive vibe?

You!

Even with the high level of commitment and drive of WSC’s faculty and staff, our students would benefit from additional support from trustworthy adults who provide a consistent presence in their lives. As we begin the school year, we’re actively recruiting caring, committed adults in our community to join our Connecting Youth Mentoring Program and help make a difference in the lives of Williston students.

Our school-based CY Mentoring Program is one of the few in the state. We connect adults with middle-school students, and each pair commits to spending one hour together each week of the school year. Each mentor-mentee pair decides how to spend that time. There is no set playbook. That time often includes conversation, game-playing, reading, crafts, baking, and exploring shared interests. It’s not overtly about improving academic performance; it’s about building confidence and a stronger sense of self. It’s about being there for each other.

A good mentoring relationship is a two-way street. Both the mentor and the mentee value the time they spend together and learn from each other. With a successful track record of more than 25 years, the CY Mentoring Program proves again and again that a bit of informal tutelage from a respected adult helps make a difference in students' lives. Over the years, Williston's mentors have inspired growth, boosted young people's trajectories, and strengthened the entire community.

And here’s a little secret: CY mentors find the experience immensely rewarding.

Williston students come into the program in two ways: they ask to be included, or parents or school personnel refer them because they think their child will benefit.

Mentors need only to raise their hands and volunteer. Sound doable?

Williston’s CY Mentoring Program has enjoyed incredible backing from several community organizations, including the Williston Federated Church and the Rotary Club of Williston-Richmond. Both organizations have supported the program through financial donations and mentor recruitment. Additionally, hundreds of other selfless individuals – no doubt your friends and neighbors – have mentored a student over the years.

Are you ready to make a difference in the life of a youngster? Do you want to be part of the verve and positivity coursing through our school?

Please consider joining us!

If you’re interested in becoming a mentor at WSC or at other schools in the CVSD district, Contact Williston Central School Connecting Youth Mentoring Coordinator Rebecca Martell at rmartell@cvsdvt.org
