Hardman's Happenings

Hello Oak Hill Families!

As we move into September, I want to thank you for helping us start the school year on such a positive note. The excitement of the first weeks has been energizing, and it is clear that our students are already settling into routines, engaging in learning, and participating in the many opportunities our schools provide.

It is hard to believe that we are already at the midterm of the first quarter. Last week, families received an email explaining how to check midterm grades in Skyward Family Access. I encourage you to log in, click on the Grading Tile, and review your child(ren)’s Midterm 1 (M1) grades. We’ve had an amazing start to the year, and much of that is thanks to the strong partnership between students, staff, and families. Keeping communication open between home and school is essential, so please reach out to your child’s teacher with any questions or concerns.

Upcoming eLearning Days

  • Monday, September 22 – This will be an asynchronous eLearning day. There will be no in-person school. Assignments will be posted in Google Classroom (grades 3–12) or SeeSaw (grades K–2) by Friday, September 19 at 5:00 p.m. to give families extra flexibility. Assignments are due by 11:59 p.m. on September 22. If your child does not have reliable internet access at home, please communicate that with their teacher so accommodations can be made. Teachers will be engaged in professional development that day and will respond to emails as they are able.

  • Wednesday, October 15 – Our second asynchronous eLearning day. Students will complete assignments online while staff conduct Parent–Teacher Conferences. More details regarding conference scheduling will be shared soon.

Update on Building Projects

We are excited to share a few updates on district projects:

  • Pool Dehumidification System – Installation is complete, and the school pool will be back in operation on Monday, September 15.

  • Junior High Roof – The roof project is nearly finished, with only the roof cap left to be installed.

  • Playground Equipment – New playground equipment is scheduled to ship on September 29, with installation projected for the week of October 6 (weather permitting). Installation will begin at Swayzee Elementary and then continue at our other schools.

Homecoming Week
Mark your calendars—Homecoming Week at Oak Hill Schools is September 29 – October 3, concluding with the football game against the Blackford Bruins! Emails have already been sent with links to order Homecoming shirts and view the week’s itinerary. Homecoming is always a highlight of the fall, giving students a chance to celebrate school spirit with activities and dress-up days throughout the week.

Thank you for helping make the first weeks of school so positive and successful. I hope your family has had a great start to the year, and I look forward to all the exciting things ahead this fall.

Yours in Education,

Sheri Hardman

  • Students will not be allowed to charge any a la carte foods (anything other than a complete meal), including extra servings and milk.

  • When a $5.00 negative balance is reached the student will still receive the meal but their parents/guardians will get an email notification and/or phone call from the Food Service Director.

  • The student’s account will continue to accrue charges for meals until a cash, check or online payment is made on the account.

Drop Off

As a reminder, students are to be dropped off in the front parking lot near the crosswalk that runs through the parking lot. I’ve noticed several parents pulling up to the curb in the alley that runs next to the school. That portion of the alley is a two way, and the curb is painted yellow, so it should not be used as a drop off. Please see the map below for the traffic flow and drop off location.

Medication

Please make sure you are following the school’s and state’s guidelines on medication that is brought to school.

● All medication must be brought to the office upon entering the building where it will be

locked in a drawer or cabinet.

● Parents or guardians must fill out a written authorization regarding proper administration

of medication while in school. The medication permission form is available at each

building or online.

● Prescription medications must be brought in original containers with the pharmacy label

for the correct student. The label will serve as written consent of the physician.

● For non-prescription medication, written authorization from parent or guardian is needed.

It is also a part of the enrollment process. This is only good for one school year and will

need to be renewed each year.

● The school provides some over the counter medications (tylenol, ibuprofen, benadryl)

and an epi pen for anaphylactic emergencies. The directions on the label will be followed

unless a physician orders otherwise.

● Parents/guardians are responsible at the end of treatment for picking up any unused

medication from the school. If it remains at the school at the end of the school year, it will

be disposed of by the school nurse.

● Students with chronic medical conditions may possess and self administer medication in

an emergency while on school grounds (or off school grounds at a school event) if the

parent has given written permission and has provided a written statement from their

physician.

Medication cannot be left in backpacks or lockers and cannot be shared with other students.

Students can be subject to disciplinary actions and in certain circumstances a call will be made

to DCS or law enforcement if these guidelines are not followed.

Facebook

We share information and images from our school day on Facebook pretty frequently. This is also a place that we share any school delays or other events. Please like and follow us on facebook @ The Swayzee Elementary School.

Greetings from Oak Hill Junior High

With all of the excitement and learning happening at our building, it’s hard to believe that we have finished one month of school. Everyone is now back in the routine and the junior high is already seeing the accomplishments of its students. Our teachers and staff have been working hard to get the new school year started off well. Before you know it, the leaves will begin to change color, students will be participating in homecoming activities, and fall break will be upon us.

As a reminder, Oak Hill Junior High School opens its doors to students at 7:35AM and classes begin at 8:10AM. Once the doors open, students may go to the cafeteria to grab breakfast or to the JH commons area. If you bring your son or daughter to school, please make sure you drop them off at door #23 at the back of the JH. Car riders should not be dropped off at the front of the building. This is for car riders to avoid bus traffic. School is dismissed at 3:10PM. Car riders also need to be picked up at door #23 by 3:20PM.

Once again, the staff at Oak Hill Junior High School will do its very best to make this the most successful year for your 7th or 8th grader. If you ever need anything, you may contact Junior High at 765-395-3341 and select option 5. You may also contact Mr. Shawn Means, Oak Hill Junior High School Principal, at extension 5001.

Attendance at Home Football Games

It is our goal at Oak Hill Junior High School for our students and families to be able to attend athletic events throughout the school year. With so many people in attendance at these events, especially varsity football and basketball, safety is a top priority for all of us. In order for these events to be enjoyable for all in attendance, we need the following expectations to be met:

1. All JH students need to be accompanied by an adult who stays for the entire contest. An older sibling who is in school is not considered an adult. These are not drop and go events, and parents/guardians must stay the entire time.

2. No balls will be allowed to be taken into the event by spectators. If balls are brought in, they will be confiscated and will need to be picked up at the end of the event.

3. Students are to stay with the adults that bring them to the athletic contest or seated in a specified “JH section”. Students should not be running around. If a student comes to an athletic event they are to come and cheer for Oak Hill.

4. Students will not be allowed to play on the practice fields or around the concession area and should keep off of other fields (softball, baseball, etc.)

Thank you for your help in ensuring that our home athletic events are enjoyable for all in attendance.

Important Upcoming dates for Oak Hill Junior High School

8th Grade Outsiders Day - September 19

On Friday, September 19th, your students will participate in “Outsiders Day” after finishing the novel The Outsiders. This day will consist of watching the movie and having several contests: costume, time-period dance, podcast, muscle car, shoebox model, poem/rap, music, diorama, and best re-enactment. You can check out these projects on Google Classroom.

In order to have prizes for the winners, we are asking for your help. We are asking for $5 gift cards from Subway, McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Starbucks, etc. We need to collect about 50. This will enable us to give a nice gift to the winners for their hard work. If you are willing or able to donate, we would greatly appreciate it! These can be brought in at any time.

Also, in the past we have had several family members showcase their classic cars. If you or someone else you know has a classic car that they would like to show the students, please email me and I’ll give you more information. (bethbo@ohusc.k12.in.us)

Thank you,

Mrs. Boswell
