A Message from our principal, Ms. Saavedra

Dear El Marino Families,

October 19th officially marks my first full month as principal of El Marino. It has been a great month of getting to know some wonderful families and amazing students. I have been impressed by the kindness of our students toward others and thank you in supporting them into becoming good citizens and a beautiful part of our El Marino Community.

Sincerely,

Paula Saavedra

EARTHQUAKE SAFETY

Each year we practice Earthquake safety in our schools. During an earthquake, you will reduce your chance of injury if you do the following:

When outdoors/outside, move away from buildings, telephone poles, streetlights, tr ees, or any other object which has the potential to fall over and possibly injure you. Try to remain calm and, once the shaking stops, look for an adult to assist you.

When indoors, drop down to your knees, stay low, and crawl under a sturdy table, desk, or other object. If there is no desk, table, or other form of shelter nearby, crawl next to an interior wall away from windows and objects that could fall and injure you.

Most importantly, be sure to pull yourself inward into as small a shape as possible, with your head facing the ground and your arm and hand covering your neck and head as protection.

october is disability awareness month

In honor of Disability Awareness month this October, El Marino PTA Special Education Committee is organizing a read-aloud of books on disability during the last two weeks of October.

We are recruiting parent volunteers who can read a selected book on disability for the first 5 minutes of the weekly library time for each class.

Please review the available slots from the link below:

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0e44aaa82ca2f8c16-emlibrary

Each classroom has one library time per week, so each class has a total of two slots available. If you sign up, please contact your teacher to confirm the date and time you are arriving. On the date of your read-aloud, bring your volunteer badge, sign in at the front office and walk to the school library to await the class.

Volunteer clearance is required.

Questions? Contact chisato.komatsu@elmarinopta.org. Thank you!

what are we doing in vocal music

K/K/1/2 Vocal Music:

Vocal music at El Marino has started off wonderfully this year! If your student is in TK or Kindergarten they have vocal music every Wednesday with Ms. Koplinka-Loehr or Mrs. Gallagher. 1st and 2nd graders have music every other Wednesday. We have been having so much fun singing, dancing, and moving to music together!

If you are in TK or Kindergarten with Mrs. Gallagher, please ask your student for their "Ask Me" sheet that was handed out to them in music class. You can ask them to sing Oh My, No More Pie, Hop, Ol' Squirrel, and Frog in the Meadow. Additionally, you can ask them to dance our Celia Cruz dance, "La Vida Es Un Carnival"

If you are in TK or Kindergarten with Ms. Koplinka-Loehr, please ask your student for their "Ask Me" sheet that was handed out to them in music class. You can ask them to sing "Hickety Pickety Bumblebee" and "Oh My, No More Pie", and "Hop, Ol' Squirrel,". Additionally, you can ask them to dance "Also Spracht Zarathustra," and show you their timpani drum!

If your student is in 1st grade with Mrs. Gallagher, ask your student to sing Oh My, No More Pie, Blackbird, Blackbird, and Pass the Pumpkin. 2nd graders with Mrs. Gallagher can sing our "Hello Song" in 6 languages and can teach you the game "Zapatito Blanco". You can also ask your student to tell you about our friend Armando the Avocado and demonstrate what their head voice is!

If your student is in 1st grade with Ms. Koplinka-Loehr, ask your student to sing "Up Above My Head," "Circle Round the Zero" and "I Let her Go-Go" for you--and encourage them to do the song-dances with you, as well! You can also ask your student to perform the dance to "Waltz in Ab" by Johannes Brahms. If your student is in 2nd grade with Ms. Koplinka-Loehr, please ask them to sing "Tikka Takka Tikka Takka Wally Woo Woo," and "Penny You Must Wander," (and they can play the penny passing game with you, as well!) You can also ask your student to perform the dance to "Waltz in Ab" by Johannes Brahms.

If you have any questions about the vocal music program, feel free to reach out directly to Mrs. Gallagher at: kimberlygallagher@ccusd.org or Ms. Koplinka-Loehr at: daniellekoplinkaloehr@ccusd.org.

We hope you are having fun listening to your students' wonderful singing voices!
