Staying Healthy and Focused

10 TIPS FOR STAYING HEALTHY and FOCUSED

  1. Get plenty of sleep every night (teens need 8-10 hours/night; 8 hours is great for adults)

  2. Strive for 60 minutes of physical activity every day; 30 minutes is better than nothing! Walking, dancing, pickleball, sports, mowing grass, biking, golfing, swimming, etc. Get outside and get some fresh air!

  3. Stay hydrated! Take a water bottle everywhere you go! Please! Especially in this heat; we need to replenish! Drink water, electrolyte drinks and coconut water!

  4. AVOID energy drinks! There is not one “healthy” energy out there for teens! Their bodies cannot handle the amount of caffeine. Consuming energy drinks is associated with increased heart rate and blood pressure, anxiety, sleep disturbance, fatigue (after the caffeine crash), and irritability.

  5. Eat three meals a day with healthy snacks in between. Encourage your child to eat lunch (especially if they skip breakfast). Quick grabs include: apples, bananas, protein bars, clementines, string cheese, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, trail mix, beef jerky.

  6. Decrease screen time and social media.

  7. Vaping is not “okay”. Please talk to your child about the dangers of vaping, smoking, drinking alcohol and drugs.

  8. Wear a helmet when biking, riding a scooter, hover boards, etc.

  9. Wear a seat belt. Buckle up every time!

  10. Talk it out. Do not be afraid to ask tough questions or have those uncomfortable conversations. Find a loved one, a friend, a counselor when you are feeling sad or overwhelmed.
