GRIZZ-O-GRAM
January 19, 2024
April 24th, 2026
Francisco's Friday Roar
In April, we had the opportunity to celebrate Assistant Principal Appreciation Week, and I want to take a moment to recognize our incredible Assistant Principals, Becca Laroi and Hillary Cusenza. They truly keep our school running smoothly, often behind the scenes, with unwavering dedication and care.
Becca and Hillary are exceptional educators who lead from a stance of service—bringing expertise, compassion, and strong advocacy for our students, staff, and community members each and every day. Their commitment, professionalism, and heart for this work never go unnoticed. I am continually amazed by their dedication and the positive impact they have on our school community.
We are incredibly fortunate to have them, and I am deeply grateful for all they do. Thank you, Becca and Hillary, for everything you bring to our school!

A Message From WinterSpring
WinterSpring Grief Support At Your School Has Now Concluded
We wanted to let you know about our grief support group opportunities for children ages 6 and up, their families, and adults, in-person at our Medford campus during the school year. We enroll all year long. If you are interested in learning more, please Click Here to Visit the WinterSpring Website, or call 541-552-0620 to speak with a grief group coordinator, M-F 9am-5pm. If we miss your call, please leave a detailed message with a callback number and the best day and time of day to reach you.
- For anyone interested in receiving our services, step 1 is to call 541-552-0620. We are not a crisis center and will return all phone calls within 2-5 business days. People calling can expect to have a brief conversation with one of our staff around who they lost, and together we decide what support is a good fit for them at the moment they call and also down the road.
- For on-campus grief support groups, we recommend that adults are 2+ months past a significant loss prior to joining. Children and teens may want to join earlier. There is no timeline to grief; some people may prefer to wait 4 or more months before they feel ready to join a group. We will be here when and if you are ready.
- Our standard in-person adult peer-to-peer grief support groups are held 3 times a year and include: Healing Hearts, Bereaved Parents, Circle of Grief, Spouse & Partner Loss, and Pregnancy and Infant Loss.
- We have one virtual grief class that runs year-round. Enroll in Navigating the Stormy Seas of Grief here.
- Our groups are closed, meaning we enroll every few months, and the same participants go through an 8-week group as a cohort.
- We hold one open, in-person, mixed loss group for adults. Same rules apply as our other in-person groups, they must be an adult 2+ months from their loss and not expecting crisis services. Mo(u)rning Coffee meets most Mondays at 10am. Check our website to check the location and date before joining us.
- We periodically offer art workshops, a Virtual Trauma Sensitive Yoga and Grief Group, and movement workshops to address grief in a way other than sharing in a group setting. Call us for more information.
We've been honored to serve your school community and students these past months. Thank you for trusting us during this trying time.

Cell Phone Policy Reminders
Hello Families,
We wanted to send a brief reminder about our school’s cell phone expectations. We’ve seen more phones coming out during the school day, especially during passing periods, lunch, and other unstructured times, and we want to ensure we stay consistent with district policy.
As a reminder, Ashland School District’s updated electronic device policy requires that student cell phones and personal electronic devices remain off and put away from the moment students enter campus until they leave campus. This includes passing periods, breaks, and lunch. Devices may only be used if a staff member gives explicit permission or if an approved exception in the board policy applies. https://policy.osba.org/ashland/J/JFCEB%20D1.PDF
The goal of this policy is simple: more focus, more connection, and fewer distractions. While phones are part of daily life, we also know students learn and engage more fully when they are present with their peers and teachers.
If your student needs a locker to help keep their device stored during the school day, they can come to the main office to pick up a locker agreement form.
Thank you for your support in helping keep our learning environment focused and consistent for all students.
Starting January 1, 2026, Ashland School District’s updated electronic device policy goes into effect. The goal is simple — more focus, more connection, and less distraction.
During class time, phones, earbuds, and smartwatches need to be off and put away. Students can use them before school and after school, students cannot use their devices during school hours, including lunch, breaks, passing periods- they must be turned off and put away from bell to bell.
We know phones are part of life, but we also know our students learn and connect best when they’re fully present. This update helps keep classrooms focused and encourages face-to-face interaction the good kind.
Thanks for your support as we continue to make AHS a place where students can thrive, stay engaged, and enjoy being part of this community. If your student needs a locker to help accommodate this change, please have them come to the main office to receive a locker agreement form.
Please use this link to view the official ASD board policy: https://policy.osba.org/ashland/search.asp?si=75853865&pid=r&nsb=1&n=0&_charset_=windows-1252&bcd=%F7&s=ashland&query=devices

PARENTS - Please keep students with symptoms out of school!
This list is school instructions, not medical advice. Please contact your health care provider with health concerns. Each column depicts the symptoms of an illness and the length of time after which a student can return to school. This time will vary based on type of illness.
SBAC Testing
A Reminder About SBAC Testing
SBAC testing is around the corner, and we here at AHS want to acknowledge why state testing is an important tool for not only educators, but for students as well.
Testing is a crucial aspect of learning because it enables students to showcase their knowledge and abilities. Regularly taking these kinds of tests can boost students' confidence and enhance their test-taking skills, which is a valuable asset for their continued education and success.
State assessments like the SBAC also offer valuable insights into student learning, aiding teachers and parents in enhancing instruction and supporting student achievement. Results play a vital role in pinpointing areas where students excel and areas where they need improvement. By addressing these learning needs promptly, teachers and parents can concentrate their efforts on providing targeted instruction to foster success.
This is also how we show the community and the world just what our students are able to do and how well we have done as a school to prepare them. We take pride in what we do and we want students to show pride in what they have learned by doing their best.
Students should strive to do their personal best on the SBAC. Education is a journey of growth and development, and it's through this process that students can set personal goals and take ownership of their learning and strive for continuous improvement.

Oregon Family Income Survey
Below is a brief Family Income Survey we hope you will fill out if you see you qualify
Ashland School District qualifies as a USDA Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) site; this means all students in the Ashland School District have access to a free breakfast and lunch. AHS still wants to know which of our students would traditionally qualify for free and reduced lunch. We use this information to make sure we can direct resources to the students that need it most. The information is completely confidential and for administrative use only. Students who qualify are eligible for reduced fees for school events like our dances as well as reduced fees for AP Tests. Completed forms should be turned into the Main Office to the attention of the Bookkeeper.
Want to Sign Your Student Up to Ride the Bus?
Go to the ASD website and select Departments from the top row, then Transportation, and then select the ASD Transportation Request Form.

What is the Meaning of the Pride Flag?
The Pride Flag, a symbol of this celebration, represents different aspects of the LGBTQ2SIA+ community. The colors of the flag hold significant meaning: red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, blue for harmony, and purple for spirit. We embrace the Pride Flag as a reminder of the beauty of diversity and the ongoing struggle for equality.
At Ashland High School
We believe in fostering a community where every individual is respected, valued, and celebrated for who they are. As we enter Pride Month, we work in solidarity with LGBTQ2SIA+ families and people of all marginalized identities, acknowledging the importance of their contributions and the unique challenges they may face.
