Is your student interested in being a part of our co-ed Lacrosse program?!

We recently announced the cancelation of our season due to low registration numbers, but we have received some feedback that there may be more students interested. This is a great program ran by Coach Anderson, the SHS Lacrosse coach!

If we receive enough registrations by December 5th, we will be able to get it up and running!

If your student would like to participate, please register below.

Cutting Back on Sugar Consumption

Tis’ the season… sugar is EVERYWHERE! From Halloween to Valentine’s Day and every holiday in between, it is a season for added sugar intake. Candy, pies, cookies, and holiday treats are all in surplus this time of year. Sugar in the body creates a cascade of negative effects, including: lack of concentration, energy crashes, food cravings, mood swings, anxiety, irritability, and many other feelings/symptoms. This is not unique to students though; children and adults experience such presentations when they are consuming too many sugary foods or drinks. It is very important to have an awareness of the alarming amount of added sugars that are in many foods such as holiday cookies, coffee/energy beverages, yogurts, cereals/granola, protein bars or shakes, condiments, salad dressings, spaghetti sauce, pop, and so many more. It is recommended that children consume no more than 3-6 teaspoons (or 12-24 grams) of sugar per day. Today, children are consuming up to 16 teaspoons of sugar per day (up to 64 grams!!!) which can lead to many serious health conditions. (Not to mention- excess sugar diminishes our immune system; ever wonder why illnesses increase so much in the winter months?)
The health office recommends focusing especially on reducing sugary drinks and encourages zero-sugar added water flavorings instead of pop or juice. Making small changes may help improve your childs’ moods, behaviors, and concentration. Give it a try and see if you notice a difference! Happy Holidays 🙂

Middle School Break Survival Guide: Connect and Recharge!

The Thanksgiving break is a fantastic chance to hit the pause button on the stress of school and life’s stressors. For our middle school students, Thanksgiving break is the perfect time to strengthen ties with family and friends and make sure you come back to school feeling rested and ready!

Connection: Middle school is all about finding your independence, but strong connections with family and friends is still what brings happiness to the table. Try out these ideas to strengthen and build your connections over break:

  • The Interview Project: Choose an older relative or friend and interview them! Ask about what they were like in middle school, their favorite childhood memory, or what life was like before today’s technology. You may be surprised by what you learn!

  • Create a Family Playlist: Work with your family to create a playlist of songs everyone likes, or maybe a mix of your favorite music and their favorite "old-school" music. Play it when you are together.

  • Game On!: Break out a board game, a deck of cards, or teach your family a new game you learned. Spending focused time on a fun activity is a great way to bond.

Reset and Recharge: Your brain is constantly working when at school. Use this break to re-center, re-charge and give your mind and body a chance to start over. Here are some things to consider:

1. Sleep

  • The Goal: Aim for at least 8-10 hours of sleep each night.

  • Actionable Tip: If you want to sleep in, try to keep your wake-up time within two hours of your regular school wake-up time. This way, your internal clock doesn't get completely confused.

  • The 30-Minute Wind Down: 30 minutes before bed, ditch all screens (phone, tablet, TV). Read a book, listen to calm music, or talk to a parent. The blue light from screens blocks the sleep chemical, melatonin.

2. Digital Detox and Balance

Scrolling on your phone or playing video games might feel relaxing, but research shows too much screen time can increase feelings of stress and anxiety. Give your eyes and your brain a break!

  • Try the 1-Hour Challenge: Set a timer and put your phone/device away for one full hour. Put it in a different room if you need to! Use that time to do something non-screen related like reading a physical book, drawing, listening to music without the visual distraction, playing with a pet, or helping cook.

3. Movement Matters!

Physical activity is one of the most powerful natural stress relievers you have. When you move, your body releases endorphins—your brain's natural happy chemicals!

  • You Don't Need a Formal Workout; Start Small: Move your body in any way that feels good! Walking, dancing, playing a sport, or whatever feels good to you.

  • Actionable Tip: Get Outside: Spending time outdoors! Even just 15 minutes can reduce stress.

We look forward to hearing about our student’s breaks, and we look forward to welcoming them back to school on December 1, 2025.

We're looking to make our middle school lunch periods even more engaging and fun for our students, and we need your help! The College of St. Scholastica OT students have been working with us to find ways to make our lunches more engaging and fun for the students. We have created a game cart and are in need of more supplies.

We're collecting gently used games for our students to play during their lunch breaks. Games are a great way for them to socialize and have some fun with friends.

Do you have any of the following lying around that you don't use anymore?

Card Games? (Uno, Phase 10, Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza, etc)

Board Games? (Chess, Checkers, Connect Four, Scrabble, etc)

Small group games (Tenzi, Dominos, Yahtzee, extra dice)

We kindly ask that all donations are complete and in gently used condition.

How to Donate:

Games can be dropped off in the main office.

Thank you for helping us enrich our students' lunchtime experience! Your generosity will bring a lot of joy and connection to our campus.
