Spring Break, April 7-11

We wish our students and families a restful spring break. We look forward to seeing our students back at school on Monday, April 14.

State Testing Schedule: Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) and 8th Grade Science

Our staff is proud of our students and the learning growth they have made this year. We are looking forward to our students showing what they know on the state tests. We use these results to inform our teaching practices and design instructional programs for our students, as well as prepare them for high school since one of the high school graduation requirements is to show proficiency on state tests.

Our students’ performances on state tests over the years have contributed to SMS being considered one of the highest performing middle schools in the area.

To provide the least disruption for our students, students will take the state tests in their core classes with their core teachers. Therefore, students will take the ELA SBA in their ELA class, the Math SBA in their math class, and 8th graders will take the Science state test in their science class. Teachers will notify students of their respective testing schedules. In general, below are the testing windows at SMS:

All Grades ELA SBA, April 29 - May 9

8th Grade Science Test: May 13 - May16

All Grades Math SBA, May 20 - May 30

To help your child do their best on these tests, make sure your child:

  • gets plenty of sleep the night before

  • eats a healthy breakfast

  • gets to school on time

  • brings a charged chromebook and pencil

  • brings a positive, can-do attitude!

3rd Quarter Grades Mailed Home Next Week

Third quarter progress report grades will be mailed home the week of April 7-11. You can also check your child's grade on Family Access.

If your child is earning a C-, D or F and/or has multiple missing assignments, please contact your child’s teacher or counselor so that we can partner together to help your child achieve academic success.

Parent Review Night for HIV/AIDS Prevention

Washington State law requires that every student receives HIV/AIDS prevention education in grades 5 through 12. Because this unit covers sensitive topics, Washington State law and SBLSD board policy require that parents/families are provided the opportunity to preview these lessons.

The Sumner-Bonney Lake School District (SBLSD) is hosting a curriculum night for families to preview the HIV/AIDS prevention curriculum for students enrolled in the following:

  • 6th and 7th grade students (HIV/AIDS),

  • 2nd semester 8th grade Skills for Life (HIV/AIDS) and

  • 9th grade Health classes (Health content), and

  • Applicable 10th through 12th grade classes (HIV/AIDS).

The curriculum will be available for preview. This is an opportunity for parents and guardians to understand the health content for grades 6-12, preview teaching materials and ask questions about the resources used in the classroom.
