A Note from Mrs. Bagarozza (Mrs. B)

Hello WPS Families,

We are becoming increasingly excited as we get closer to WPS orientation on Thursday, September 3, 2026 and the first day of school on Tuesday, September 8, 2026! Please ensure you have reviewed all of the important documents below including our orientation times, supply lists, and school calendar. Please complete the transportation survey linked below at your earliest convenience, if you haven’t already!

While the back to school excitement is in the air, it’s also normal for both parents and children to feel a little nervous. Whether this is your first school year or you’re returning for another, here are a few suggestions to help your family start the year with confidence and less stress.

Every child and family is unique, so please take what works for your family and leave what doesn't!

  • Practice the morning routine: In the days leading up to school, begin waking your child around the time you will need to on school mornings and practice getting ready by the time you would have to leave for school.

  • Build in extra time: Preschool mornings can take longer than expected! Give yourself plenty of time so that your child does not feel rushed. A calm morning can make a big difference in how a child approaches the rest of the day.

  • Prepare the night before: Pack the backpack, prepare snacks and water bottles, choose clothing, and gather anything else your child will need. The fewer decisions you have to make in the morning, the better!

  • Talk positively about school: Children take many of their cues from the adults around them. Talk positively and confidently about school, your child's teacher, the bus (if applicable), and the exciting things they will get to do. Remember that children can hear more than we sometimes realize!

  • Visit “Airplane Park”: The public park right next to WPS is a place we utilize regularly for recess. Consider visiting before school begins so your child can become familiar with the area.

  • Read books about starting school: Picture books are a wonderful way to introduce and talk about the experience without making it feel like a big conversation or lecture. Some of our favorites include:

    • Time for School, Little Blue Truck

    • Pete the Cat: Rocking in His School Shoes

    • Pete the Kitty’s First Day of Preschool

    • Llama Llama Back to School

    • The Night Before Preschool (which we provide to all NEW students at orientation)

I also feel it is important to mention that as first day of school posts become prevalent on social media with special breakfasts, themed decor, and special traditions, try to remember that you don’t have to "do it all" to be a wonderful parent. Whether your morning includes a special tradition or simply finding a missing shoe and getting out the door, there is no “right” way to start the year. Give yourself some grace and remember it doesn't have to be perfect. Your child just needs the calm, security, and confidence your presence brings and we can take care of the rest together!

Finally, we expect some students to have difficulty separating during the first few days of school. This is a very normal part of the preschool transition, and it may happen even with children who seemed completely ready for school during orientation. Our staff will support your child, and we will support you, too.

If you have questions or concerns at any point, please reach out to me, your child's case manager, or your child's classroom teacher. We are partners in this process, and we want you to feel comfortable asking questions, sharing concerns, and celebrating successes with us. We are so excited to welcome our students and families back to school. We can't wait to see you, and we are looking forward to a wonderful year together!

Sincerely,

Samantha Bagarozza

Ready, Set, Belong: 5 Ways to Prepare for a Positive Start

Whether your child is entering elementary, middle, or high school, the start of a new school year brings a mix of excitement, anticipation, and sometimes a little uncertainty. While each stage of development presents unique experiences, there are a few universal strategies that can help students of all ages feel prepared, connected, and confident.

1. Get Back into a Routine
A week or two before school starts, begin returning to school-year routines. Younger children can practice bedtime and morning routines, while older students can reset sleep schedules and organize school materials.

2. Build a Sense of Belonging
Connecting with familiar peers can make returning to school feel easier. Plan a playdate for younger children or encourage older students to connect with friends before the first day.

3. Get Familiar with the School Routine
Help your child know what to expect. Younger children can practice drop-off, while older students can review schedules, transportation, locker combinations, or classroom locations.

4. Encourage Voice and Agency
Help your child practice speaking up, asking for help, and solving everyday problems. Talk through situations such as forgetting lunch, getting lost, missing the bus, or needing help. Older students can practice emailing a teacher or asking a question on their own.

5. Talk About Their Feelings
Make time to talk about excitement, worry, or uncertainty. Help your child make a simple plan, such as talking to a Trusted Adult, reaching out to a friend, or asking a teacher for help.
