Compliance Corner

Exceptions, Waivers, and PEIMS...Oh, My!

October was a busy month in the LPAC world!

Bilingual Exception and ESL Waiver applications are due to TEA today, Friday, November 1st. Submit the completed application and the Alternative Language Program/Recruiting Activities Form as attachments in an email to: BilingualExceptions_ESLWaivers@tea.texas.gov.

The annual Bilingual/ESL Program Evaluation is also due to your school board today. The date of the annual evaluation presentation falls after the first day of the school year but before November 1 of that school year. District policy shall determine whether a district is required to present a written report ONLY or to also make a presentation of the written report to the board.

TEA is aware that many districts are encountering difficulty in entering new PEIMS coding for English learners, particularly with the Alternative Language Program code for students under a bilingual education exception or English as a second language (ESL) waiver. Many LEAs were hoping to have the correct information entered by October 25th for the snapshot. However, some data systems may not yet have had these new PEIMS codes updated within their systems. Please be aware that if you are unable to enter PEIMS coding correctly before snapshot, you will need to enter the updated, correct information prior to the fall submission on December 5th, 2019. Also, be sure to verify with your data system vendor that the updated information entered after snapshot will be extracted for the December 5th submission.

If you have any BE/ESL compliance questions, please do not hesitate to contact Jennifer Phillips via email at jennifer.phillips@region10.org or by phone at 972-348-1050.

This innovated portal provides a one stop shop approach for all stakeholders to access state and federal guidance and web-based resources to boost student outcomes. We NOW offer a translation feature to toggle between the top languages in Texas. Visit www.elltx.org and see how you can implement these great resources to increase the impact on the academic success of the State’s English learners.
