A Common Language for Strategies
Make sure you have this poster hanging proudly in your class!
AVID requires national demonstration campuses to use a "common language" with AVID strategies. Our staff is rocking the use of strategies, this poster will help make sure we are all using the same name.
WHY AVID?
AVID is an elective class, but the AVID strategies are a system to help ALL students (AVID Scholars) close any opportunity gaps and teach them the skills to be successful.
Artifact Due Dates
Click on the graphic above and will be linked to our google form that will allow you to submit your second AVID Artifact. This item is due Feb. 1st. We cannot wait to see your second round of strategies being used school-wide.
Collaboration has taken over Haltom high classes!
Carla Campos is well known at Haltom for being a state ranked wrestler. Her dedication to pursuing greatness does not end in athletics. Carla is also the epitome of what hard work means in the classroom. Please enjoy this video of Carla working through her Physics problem during the AVID tutorial process. The beginning of the video will show her setting up and introducing her problem to her group members. At 12ish minutes Carla and group members are debating different options for a solution using focused notes and resources from class. At minute 16 she has her AH HA moment and finds the solution. FUN FACT- the following day Carla made a 96 on her physics test!
CTE Philosophical Chair Discussion
AP Art Carousal Brainstorming
SAT Prep
If you are looking for a great strategy to help your EB's and ELL's Philo Chair discussions are a unique way to engage ALL students, make them justify their opinions and teaches them to collaborate in an educated manner. In the clip below ELL student, Jacob Diaz Q. participated in his US History classes Philo chair discussion. The topic of discussion started off as who was more influential during the civil rights movement, Martin Luther King Jr. or Malcom X? The discussion organically evolved to, "Is violence ever ok even if it means you win because of it?" Jacobo had the opportunity with the help of one of his teachers to help translate and share his opinion stating that violence is never ok because it only leads to more violence. I had the opportunity to visit with Jacobo and get his opinion on the learning strategy being used in class. "Realmente disfruté el debate, me refiero a la discusión. Fue fácil de entender según el tema del que estábamos hablando. Estaba un poco nerviosa por hablar frente a la clase, pero tener a mis maestros allí para ayudarme a traducir me hizo sentir más cómoda para compartir. Los hechos que investigamos fueron fáciles de entender. Preferiría hablar y discutir información en mis clases como forma de aprender."
