Monthly Advocacy Tip: Advocate Across Settings

When your child is home and encounters a difficult situation or needs help, the familiar cry out of "MOM!" or "DAD!" might be their go to solution. However, what happens when your child is at school and needs help with something that happened? Or when they are out in the community? Does your child know who to turn to when their parents aren't present or they aren't in the comfort of their own home?

Our goal as parents is for our children to develop strong advocacy skills, across all settings. Take time to ask your child if they can name 2 people at school that they are comfortable reaching out to if they need help (teacher, case manager, principal, counselor, nurse, librarian, coach, receptionist, etc). Then ask them to name 2 people that they could ask for help if something occurred when they were out in the community, other than mom and dad, (neighbor, doctor, therapist, police, Family Support Specialist, etc). If your child cannot name 2 people at school that they trust and would be willing to talk to about getting help or 2 people to reach out to in the community to get assistance if needed, you might need to help them identify (suggest) some possible options. It is crucial for our children to display advocacy skills across environments in order for them to be as successful as possible in life. The first step is knowing who they can go to get the help needed.
