Pathways to Potential program conclusion
The legislature has finalized the Fiscal Year 2026 budget, which includes important decisions about how to best support children and families across the state. As a result, the Pathways to Potential (P2P) program will be concluding and resources will be redirected to strengthen child welfare through the Keep Kids Safe Action Agenda and Family Impact Teams.
Launched in 2023 by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), the Keep Kids Safe Action Agenda established dozens of protocols and policies in the child welfare areas of prevention, intervention, stability, wellness and workforce. Through this initiative, MDHHS has engaged in ongoing efforts to increase the safety and well-being of children across the state.
We will be transitioning P2P success coaches out of school no later than December 19. We are proud of the positive impact made by the P2P success coaches who have supported students and families across the state for 13 years, and we are grateful to the P2P families for their trust and participation in this program. While the form of our work is changing, the heart of it remains the same and MDHHS will continue its commitment to serving our most vulnerable youth and families.
You can continue to find help in the future by using the tools and resources in MI Bridges, contacting your local MDHHS county office at 844-464-3447 or contacting MI 2-1-1.

Hot Snacks
Please do not send hot snacks to school
Hot Takis can be bad for kids due to their high acidity, which can cause stomach pain, vomiting, and irritation, and their low nutritional value, containing high levels of fat and sodium. Excessive consumption can also exacerbate conditions like heartburn and gastritis.
- Digestive issues: The high acidity from the spices can irritate the stomach and esophageal lining, leading to stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting. In some cases, children have been taken to the emergency room for severe stomach pain after eating too many spicy snacks.
- Exacerbation of existing conditions: The spice can trigger or worsen conditions like heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
- Poor nutritional value: Takis are a high-fat, high-sodium processed food with very little nutritional value. Excessive consumption can be a concern, especially since some kids may eat multiple servings in one sitting.
- Risk of "overdosing": Some children may consume a large quantity of these snacks, seeking the "burn" or "thrill" of the spice, which can lead to acute discomfort and pain.
Progress Reports & Attendance
Report Cards are located in your parent portal. Please log in to see your child's report card. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child's teacher via email or Class Dojo.
Boys and Girls Club Winter schedule
Winter is here quickly approaching!
Please make sure that students are dressed appropriately for the weather. Student need a hat, coat, gloves, snow pants and an extra pair of pants, if they do not have any snow pants. In November, CIS distributed a number of items, free of charge, through Warm Kids. We do not have an unlimited stock of winter items for items that are lost, please encourage the children to wear winter gear on a daily basis or leave snow pants in locker for the winter months.
KPS Attendance Policy
The goal of the district is to have all students in school every day. Building administrators, in collaboration with staff members, will develop a process for acknowledging students with excellent and improved attendance in each school.
For students to get the most out of school, punctual and regular attendance is vital. Parents/guardians should call the school office as early as possible on the day of an absence. It is most helpful to have the phone call within the first hour of school. In addition, parents/guardians should provide a written excuse and request homework for any absences thus making the absence excused; without communication the absence is considered unexcused. When a student is absent, they are responsible for makeup work. Any day a child is absent and an appropriate contact with the school office is not made by the parent/guardian, attempts will be made to contact the parent/guardian.
Approved Excused Absences
Student illness and/or appointment verified by the parent/guardian or medical professional.
Medically verified extended illness or hospitalization.
Attending a funeral.
Religious holiday.
Absence due to a subpoenaed court appearance.
Any time missed due to KPS school transportation issues.
A member of our Attendance Team will contact you via email, text message or phone call when your child reaches 3, 5, 10 and 15 absences. Please partner with us in making sure that your child is at school on time everyday. We promise to provide academic and social emotional support when they are present.
CHRONIC ABSENCES: All absences including approved excused absences, unexcused absences and suspensions fall under the chronic absence category. Although you can excuse absences it doesn't remove them from the chronic absence list once the hit five or more days. The State of Michigan has identified deems any time away from school is a missed opportunity for students to learn. The chronic absence list is pulled once a semester. We work with parents and students to create attendance plans that encourage students to be at school on time.

Excellence
At Northeastern, we use P.R.I.D.E. to encourage positive behaviors. The expectations are shared daily with the students. They have an opportunity to earn Dojo points which can be used to purchase items at our school store. We also have NO referral parties and perfect attendance parties to acknowledge our students that are making good choices.
