Tidbits from the President Tidbits from the President

February…love is in the air. And our love is quilting. So many opportunities! If you want to ‘whip up’ something, consider these: A mini for the show, an entry for the show in August, something for the booth, a NICU quilt (often a quick sew), a lovie (or two), some (or all) of a QOV or hugs quilt. You can get a strip top done in a day. Maybe finish one of your UFOs. I am sure our February speaker, Pat Speth, will have something to interest you. Me? I have to organize (clean up) my sewing room. I have to get some T-shirt quilts done for the April program (more info to come later).

Now for the general info and nag. Last month’s Zoom of our meeting seemed to go well. We will endeavor to get everyone who speaks on the mic. Since it is flu season, if you are under the weather or concerned about contact, zoom in this month. The meeting link will be sent to all members a couple of days before the meeting. I also want everyone to seriously consider volunteering for mini and raffle quilt committees. They aren’t intense jobs, NOT a one-person job, just some coordination needed. Both of these are big money makers for our guild and cannot happen without someone to steer!

NTQF 2025 NTQF 2025

North Texas Quilt Festival (NTQF) will start taking quilt submissions for this year's show February 11 and will close May 31. Please consider submitting 1-3 quilts into the show this year. As always, the goal is to have 300 quilts hanging. That can't happen without our participation.

Positions still needing to be filled

at the Festival level: all of these positions would also require attendance at the NTQF zoom meetings.

1) Mini's - responsible for laying out the minis and overseeing the volunteers that work the mini auction sight.

2) Sponsorship - Someone who can reach out to businesses to ask if they will sponsor a ribbon for the show. (If you have a business or know a business owner who might be interested in sponsoring, please let us know)

3) tickets - Responsibilities include dividing the tickets and getting them to the different guilds in advance of the show

At the Guild level:

Thank you to Dorene Joyce for volunteering to be the t-shirt rep at the guild level.

We are still in need of someone who can oversee the mini's (encourage people to get some made and then get them to the mini rep at the festival level).

We would also like to have a back-up rep this year, who would then take the job over next year. If this is something you are interested in learning more about, please talk to Molly Risewick.

I will have any updates at our next meeting.

Quilt Show Booth - The Heart of the Home Quilt Show Booth - The Heart of the Home

Pat Wagers and Grace Stroud are coordinating the guild boutique at the North Texas Quilt Festival. The overall show theme is “There’s No Place Like Home”, and we are adapting that theme for our booth. Our theme will be THE HEART OF THE HOME —the kitchen. We are collecting handmade items for use in the kitchen and/or dining room. We would like placemats, table runners, table toppers, dish towels, aprons, potato bags, microwave bowl holders, coasters, potholders, etc.—anything you might use in your kitchen. Items for various holidays or seasons are usually popular. Grace has a little bit of fabric still available to anyone who’d like to use it. If you need Insulbrite thermal batting for potholders, please ask her for some. Ideally we would like to have multiples of all items, rather than onesies. Think store rather than garage sale. Use fabric that you would choose for yourself or as a gift for a friend. Here are some picture of some of the things we have collected so far. Many thanks to Ann Houpt, Laurel Grannan, Sheila Strickland for their contributions. And thanks in advance to all of our members who are in the process of creating something beautiful for our boutique, By the way, every dollar we earn goes back to our guild.

Here are pictures of some of the things we have gathered so far.

Hospitality Hospitality

The groundhog saw his shadow so it’s six more weeks of winter. Of course, it could be more or we could have an early spring. It all depends on what Mother Nature decides to do.

I want to thank those who stepped up and helped get everything ready for the January meeting. I was under the weather with a cough that just didn’t want to go away. I’m doing fine now and so thankful to be rid of the cough.

Find that favorite recipe for a Valentines treat make it and bring it to the February meeting.

Looking forward to seeing everyone.

BEES BEES

EMBROIDERY BEE

We have moved our meeting time and place to 11 am on the last Thursday of the month at Hollis Threads. There will be a $5 per person room usage fee.

Our next meeting will be at Hollis Threads on February 27, and we plan to brown bag our lunch and likely share a side or dessert. New members are welcome.

Contact Wanda Edmunds or Sarah Tutt for more information.

FRAYED KNOTS

We shared food, fellowship, and show and tell on Jan 14.

TIGHT KNOTS -- February meeting

Carolyn Hughes hosted our meeting this month. Carolyn suggested we start with Show and Tell and include anything else we wanted to share besides quilting news. Our conversations went on to include items about our health, family, and other non-quilting news. This worked out great. The bee members only had to tell their stories once and everyone else was able to hear and participate. We discussed Legos, illnesses, and grandchildren. Several bee members spoke about inventorying their quilt rooms and finding many things they needed to finish.

Margo Grunseich showed a NICU quilt she is working on and two pillowcases for Safe Haven. Cheri Bigham had two potato chip NICU quilts for us to see. Pat Wagers presented a baby quilt she is making for a friend of a friend. Grace Stroud had a beautiful black and white quilt made with an added jelly roll of bright batiks. Chris Tomich finished five quilts for JPS. Three were quilted and two were crocheted. She made one I Spy Quilt and the second quilt was a fun monkey quilt. Barbara Hughes has already finished her four pillowcases for Safe Haven this year. After poundcake and chocolates, we played LRC for red fat quarters; and Pat Ford happily took everyone’s fabric.

Start a BEE Start a BEE

One of the most fun parts of belonging to a Guild is getting to know other quilters. But, there aren’t many opportunities to actually get to SEW and learn from one another, except in a bee. Most of the guild bees have been around for many years and don’t have openings for many newcomers. If you want to get know more of your fellow members, start a new bee!

General Guidelines

  • Start with the people sitting near you at Guild or advertise in the bee section of the newsletter, or on the FB page.
  • A place to meet: dining room table, living room, playroom, apartment clubhouse, nearby church… You may want to rotate hosting among those with enough space.
  • Monthly meeting time for 1.5-4 hours. Some groups may also have periodic all-day project days or retreats.
  • Some groups organize around a common interest: appliqué, modern, art, charity projects, while some are based on proximity.
  • Start simply and see how the group’s dynamics play out through time. There are lots of activity ideas online.

Retreat 2025 Retreat 2025

Shelley has already begun to take reservations for the 2025 retreat, which will be April 3-6, 2025.

Bev Ramsey Fund Bev Ramsey Fund

Bev Ramsey was a charter member of the guild, a past president, a teacher and a friend. We lost her way too early. The Bev Ramsey fund was set up to help those in need enjoy the things she loved very much, retreats and workshops.

Quilts of Valor Quilts of Valor

The QOV National Sew Day event at the Berry Patch went very well! We had a full house with eight members in attendance. I just wish I hadn’t been out of town. Life happens, and that’s

when it’s nice to have friends who will fill in. Thank you, Ann and Laurel.

We have plenty of backing fabric to go with the tops our members have finished. Just let me know and I’ll be happy to supply some. We have a few members who will also do long arming.

Four veterans have been awarded Quilts of Valor in 2025. That brings our count to 106. The first was a Korean war vet who was nominated by his sister-in-law, who also made his quilt. The next three were Vietnam veterans.

We currently have 12 nominations on our list. The good news is there are two new QOV groups covering the Crowley, Burleson, and Cleburne areas.

We continue to succeed with the help of our members and volunteers. The generous donations of fabric and sewing hours help us to wrap service members and veterans in comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.

Lovies Lovies

Lovies are used for preemie babies and their mother's so they can become familiar with each other's scent.

If you would like to make one (or 100) take two pieces of 14" square fabric - one cotton, and one flannel. Sew them right sides together, leaving a gap to turn. Turn, then topstitch around the entire piece.

Beverly Peterson collects them at Guild meetings to give to Harris Downtown for their NICU unit. We delivered about 150 of them recently, and have asked a representative of the unit to speak briefly about what they mean to the families.

JPS NICU Quilts (and Cancer Care Center items) JPS NICU Quilts (and Cancer Care Center items)

We encourage each member to read the information below just to refresh your memory about all the items you can make for JPS. It’s not just NICU quilts. They love to get baby quilts of all sizes. The NICU quilts can’t contain flannel, but other quilts can. A new item added to the list is a wheelchair quilt (approximately 36 x 48).

Our donations are really appreciated by JPS, the moms, and any other patients who receive them.

NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) Quilts

One of our community service projects is making NICU quilts for John Peter Smith Hospital. NICU quilts are 36” x 36” prewashed cotton quilts -NO Flannel. These are placed on the incubators in the intensive care unit and become the property of the baby/baby’s family. As some of you may know, the Tight Knots Quilt Bee makes NICU quilts each year as one of their community service projects. Maybe your bee would consider doing the same.

JPS has also requested other items for their patients:

Baby Items:

Receiving blankets and baby quilts – of all sizes

Layettes and Isolettes no smaller than 52”x56”

Cozy Cub Slipcover (tubular coverlet) See the link below for a sample of this item. 40 inches long

9 inches – circumference for small

11 inches – circumference for large

CozyCub–Dandle.LionMedical www.dandlelionmedical.com

Adult Items:

These items are mainly used for patients undergoing chemotherapy at the JPS cancer center and geriatric patients.

Adult quilts or blankets (quilted or fleece)

Wheelchair quilt (approximately 36 x 48).

Ostomy bag covers

Small heart-shaped pillows for breast cancer patients to place under their arms after surgery

After working with Smore for a while, we have run into limitations of the formatting available to us. It is easiest if the information is sent either as text, JPG or JPEG pictures. We can attach PDF, Word, and XL documents to the newsletter, but they will appear as links and the reader must download them to their device to read them (easier if done from a laptop/desktop). DOC files that contain text only will be copied into the newsletter, but some of the formatting may be lost.

I would like to share pictures of show-and-tell items, but we must have someone willing to take pictures and email them to the guild email address.
