A Message from Principal Cutone
October 31, 2025
Dear HES Families / Caregivers,
We had an exceptional week at HES, highlighted by our All Shark Meeting on Tuesday. This month, our student ambassadors did a phenomenal job introducing the concept of a Growth Mindset. They used two skits, two posters, and a comic strip to share powerful lessons with their friends, emphasizing:
Engaging in positive self-talk.
Using the powerful word “yet” (e.g., "I can’t do this yet.").
Learning from mistakes and valuing practice.
With perseverance and determination, we truly can all learn to do hard things. I also read the picture book Touch the Sky by Stephanie V.W. Lucianovi. Ms. Santiago’s class, with Ms. Riley, led the school in the inspirational song, “I Can Do Hard Things.” (The video link is embedded with the photos below!)
Growth Mindset at Home
The Growth Mindset is a key component of our Second Step curriculum, which all students receive in their classrooms. You can powerfully reinforce these lessons at home.
Here’s how to encourage a Growth Mindset when your child is working hard to learn something new:
Focus on Effort and Strategy: Instead of praising talent ("You're so smart!"), focus on the work they put in and the methods they use (“You are working so hard!”).
Use Specific Praise: For example: "You tried really hard and kept practicing to learn how to ride your scooter. You’re getting better and better!”
Promote Help-Seeking: Remind them that asking for help is a smart strategy, not a failure.
Encourage Positive Self-Talk: Help them replace discouraging thoughts with helpful, determined ones.
Your Sharks are working incredibly hard at school every day, and we are so proud of their efforts and accomplishments. I wish them and all of you a wonderful weekend! Happy Halloween to all who celebrate.
Warm regards,
Christie
Notes from the Nurse
This season can be difficult for many of our families. I want to remind families about Cape Kid Meals. It is a program that provides food for our students when they are not in school. Each Thursday or Friday a bag of food for your child will come home in their backpack. This will provide most of the food they need for the weekend. If you think this would help your family, please let me know and I will add them to the list-no questions asked. If you have more questions for me please reach out.
Communications Update: New Number for School/District Text Messages
The phone number used to send school text messages has changed. SMS text messages from Monomoy will now be sent using a new number: 97178.
This change was made to improve the reliability and speed of text message delivery. We encourage you to save the new number (97178) to your contacts so you recognize messages from Monomoy right away.
Thank you for your continued partnership as we make this transition.
Monomoy Integrated Preschool program announces limited peer openings
Monomoy's Integrated Preschool program serves children ages 3-4 who have been found eligible for special education services due to a disability who learn alongside more typically developing students, called community friends. Community friends help to model age-appropriate social, play, language, and learning skills. The district currently has limited openings for community friends. These openings are due to a slight increase in the number of students with disabilities, allowing the district to add peers to maintain the required balance.
The open spots are in the three-year-old afternoon session of the integrated preschool program. The program is held four days per week for 2.5 hours each day, and is housed at Harwich Elementary School. Community friends attend the integrated preschool at no cost; however, transportation is not provided.
Families interested in applying for one of the community friend student placements should contact Erin Cronen, MRSD Early Childhood Coordinator, at 617-314-8937 or ecronen@monomoy.edu. If more applicants apply than there are available spots, a lottery will be held.

Call the Attendance Line If Your Shark Is Absent
Per the handbook, if your child is unable to attend school, please enter the absence in PickUp Patrol and/or call our designated attendance line, 617-848-0115, as early as possible. Soon after arrival, our office staff begins to call the caregivers of absent students if we haven't already heard from them. This is important, as we want to ensure that all students are safe. Your phone message with the reason for the absence is all we need. While an email to the teacher is helpful, it sometimes doesn't make its way to the office staff. Thank you for your help!
