A Note From the Counselor
Supporting Kids Who Feel Anxious
It’s normal for children to feel worried sometimes — before a test, trying something new, sleeping alone, or speaking in front of others. But for some kids, anxiety can feel big, overwhelming, and hard to manage.
The good news? There are simple, powerful ways parents can help at home.
1. Validate feelings first.
Say things like “I see that’s scary” instead of “Don’t worry.” Feeling understood helps kids calm down.
2. Teach simple calm-down tools.
Try slow belly breaths, tracing fingers while breathing, or naming things you see, hear, and feel. Practice when calm.
3. Separate the child from the worry.
Use language like “Your worry voice is loud” to help kids feel more in control.
4. Encourage small brave steps.
Break scary tasks into manageable pieces and celebrate effort, not just success.
5. Keep routines predictable.
Consistent bedtime, mornings, and expectations help kids feel safe.
6. Model calm.
Your steady example shows kids that challenges are manageable.
When to Reach Out for Extra Support
Consider reaching out to your school counselor or pediatrician if anxiety:
Interferes with school or friendships
Causes frequent stomachaches or headaches
Leads to trouble sleeping most nights
Results in frequent meltdowns or avoidance
If you have concerns about your child’s anxiety, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here to partner with you in helping your child feel safe, confident, and brave.
Together, we can help kids learn that they are bigger than their worries.
