The Riverwalk Roar

A Note from Dr. Compton
Happy Sunday, Pride!
I hope everyone is doing well and that you had a wonderful weekend. I know some of our families had an eventful and busy Saturday as they were cheering on their students as our cross country team ran at the Hare & Hounds XC Invitational in Charlotte, then our varsity cheer team spent the day at Rock Hill High School competing in the Bearcat Invitational Cheer Competition. I was able to make it to the cheer competition and it was great seeing all of the Riverwalk Academy families there cheering on our cheer team. What was even more impressive was the number of middle and high school teachers who showed up to support their students. Each of them took time out of their Saturday and even paid the gate fees, just to be there. That type of support doesn’t go unnoticed. It’s a powerful reminder that what makes Riverwalk special isn’t just what happens in the classroom, it’s the relationships built beyond it. When our students see their teachers in the stands, they know they’re supported in every step, whether it’s in academics, athletics, or the arts. That’s what “Pride in Every Step” is all about: walking alongside our students and celebrating their hard work and dedication wherever it shows up.
Speaking of what makes Riverwalk Academy special, it’s our parents. Several parents reached out to me this week expressing their gratitude for what Riverwalk Academy has meant to their families and students. They also commended the administration and staff for being approachable and accessible. Honestly, I kept waiting for the “but…,” yet there wasn’t one. They simply wanted to say “thank you.”
When I asked one parent why she felt compelled to share, her answer stuck with me. She mentioned that some people had been posting anonymously on social media, and while many families step up online to “carry the banner” for Riverwalk, it was disheartening that a few negative voices could overshadow the daily reality of what’s happening inside our school. But what stood out was her choice to focus on gratitude instead of frustration. She wanted to make sure we knew that for every anonymous comment online, there are countless families who believe in what we’re building together at Riverwalk Academy.
It was a great reminder for me, and I hope for you as well, that while we can’t control what’s said in those spaces, we can control how we show up for our students and for each other. Every act of support, every word of encouragement, and every expression of gratitude matters far more than a negative comment made behind a screen.
And remember, you never need to be anonymous if you have a concern, question, or even just feedback. Please reach out to me or to any member of our team, we’re here, we’re accessible, and we want to listen. We can’t fix what we don’t know about, so never assume that we already do.
That’s respect in action, and that’s something we can all be proud of.
Lions, I hope each of you have a wonderful week.
In Pride and Purpose,
~Dr. Compton
Pic of the Week!
Even on non-student workdays, Riverwalk Academy continues to push for excellence. During our recent teacher workday, staff members engaged in professional learning to strengthen their instructional toolkit. The day included an intensive math curriculum development session, where educators collaborated, planned, and deepened their understanding of high-impact strategies to better support student growth. Our commitment to lifelong learning ensures that every day—whether students are present or not—moves us closer to academic excellence.
