Principal's Update Principal's Update

Dear U-32 Families, Students, and Caregivers,

It has been quite a week at U-32. Thank you all for your flexibility as we closed early Thursday and took a much needed repair day on Friday. As I write this, we are still working to resolve the issue, but it is very much on the mend and we anticipate opening on Monday as usual. Fifty-five year old parts need a little cleaning occasionally, and ours were well overdue. We will get on a yearly check-up plan after this particular worry is over. Our Buildings and Grounds team have been working tirelessly to solve this problem, if you see them, thank them.

Our week was already full of excitement when Governor Scott held his weekly press conference here at U-32. Governor Scott kicked off Green-up Day (today) with inspiring words and ended the conference with a chance for questions. You can see the entirety of the press conference here. Our students acted as thoughtful participants and ambassadors to our community. They greeted guests and had a chance to ask questions of the Governor. Notably, our student press, The Chronicle, covered the event, joining the gaggle at the end, asking on-topic questions as directed during the presentation. Their questions were meaningful and pushed on the topics of interest to young people here and around the state. I look forward to seeing their reporting and I encourage you to fast forward to the last 10 minutes of the video to see their reporting.

I had the opportunity to see How to Tame a Dame last night. This student written adaptation of the Shakespeare play The Taming of the Shrew is a testament to the ways the arts can impact our local communities. Those in attendance commented on the power of the story both in its writing and creation and in its content. I hope you'll take some time to come out for the 2pm showing today.

Best,

Becca

Civil Rights Panel Speaks to U-32 8th Grade Students Civil Rights Panel Speaks to U-32 8th Grade Students

On Tuesday, April 29th the 8th grade hosted Penny Patch of Lyndonville and Gail Falk of Plainfield to speak about their personal experiences as young adults volunteering in Mississippi and Georgia, respectively, helping with voter registration efforts in the early 1960's. This was a culminating event for the 8th graders in their ELA/Social Studies unit on the history of the Civil Rights Movement. Students were moved to hear directly from people in their own community and appreciated the slideshow of photos that they shared as well.

One 8th grade student shared, "One idea I am going to take away from their presentation is that I should seek out people with my values and together we are stronger and braver to stand up for what we believe in. And that perseverance is necessary to make change." Another 8th grader shared, " As a singer myself, I enjoyed listening to them talk about the importance of songs and listening to elders. They really highlighted the importance of young people taking action to make change."

UVM Summer Academy

Designed for motivated high school students who have completed 10th, 11th, or 12th grade, the University of Vermont’s Summer Academy is an outstanding, academically challenging 4-week program (2 weeks on-campus, 2 weeks online) that provides students with the opportunity to earn credits, explore a specific area of career interest, experience college life and showcase their talent and ambition to college recruiters.

Dual Enrollment / Early College

As an incoming Vermont high school junior or senior, you are eligible for two Vermont Dual Enrollment Vouchers, allowing you to take one free college course in your junior year of high school and one in your senior year of high school. It’s called Dual Enrollment because your free college courses will also earn you credit towards graduation from high school.

Dual enrollment is offered through all VT public colleges/universities and some private colleges too. Go to http://www.vtdualenrollment.org/ for a list of participating colleges and to request a dual enrollment voucher.

High School Seniors are also eligible for Early College- got to http://education.vermont.gov/student-learning/flexible-pathways/early-college for more information

Not All Colleges and Universities Require SATs/ACTs

Not all admissions processes are created equal. One major point of difference among colleges these days is how admissions officers consider your SAT scores. More schools are de-emphasizing SAT scores as part of your application with “test optional” and “test flexible” policies. One college has even eliminated SAT scores completely!

There are now over 800 accredited, bachelor-degree granting institutions that have changed their approach to standardized test scores. (Keep in mind that the majority of colleges, especially the more prestigious schools, do still require and strongly consider your SAT scores.) Let’s take a look at the different policies and which schools no longer require applicants to submit their scores for admission. Go to www.fairtest.org for more info
