The Reading Specialist Corner The Reading Specialist Corner

The Hoboken Public School District is proud to have a certified Reading Specialist in each of our three elementary schools and Hoboken Middle School. Teaching children to read requires that every child receives excellent reading instruction and that children who are experiencing reading difficulties receive early intervention and additional instruction from professionals specifically prepared to teach them. The role of the district Reading Specialist is to provide research-based, small group reading instruction using the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education’s (IMSE) Orton-Gillingham (OG) methodology.

The purpose of the Reading Specialist Corner is to provide families with at-home literacy tips to ensure strong home-school partnerships. This week, the Reading Specialist Team is excited to share ideas to help you celebrate National Family Literacy Month.

National Family Literacy Month

National Family Literacy Day® is celebrated on November 1st each year and is a kickoff to National Family Literacy Month. This November, the celebration of National Family Literacy Month brings about a wonderful opportunity for families to learn and read together. Books have the power to transport us to other realms, help us imagine ourselves in other people’s shoes and give us a better understanding of the people and places beyond where we may travel. There is truly no better gift we can give our children than the ability to read.

Studies show that reading benefits children's writing skills, memory capacity and attention span. Reading with a family member allows children to ask questions, learn the meaning of new words and strengthen their understanding of different texts. Therefore, in honor of National Family Literacy Month, we are excited to share the following ideas and resources to help you celebrate the love of books and reading this November…and all year long!

1. Visit your local library. In addition to books, find out about all the programming your library has to offer. Many libraries offer classes, workshops, movie nights, reading groups and more for all ages on a vast variety of topics.

2. Join and participate in a book club with your child or start your very own book club in your neighborhood.

3. Share the love and joy of reading by volunteering to read. Volunteer with your child to read to patients in the hospital, to children in preschool or to the elderly in a nursing facility.

4. Attend a book festival together. Book festivals are held nationally and locally. It's a wonderful opportunity to meet authors, explore a huge variety of genres, meet people and share the joy of reading.

5. Create a book exchange in your neighborhood. Simply set up a small container to house the books and a sign that reads, "Take a book, leave a book," for your neighbors to share books.

6. Donate books. Everyone has at least a few books that they have read and that are now lying on a shelf someplace in their home waiting for eager eyes to read them again. Consider donating your gently used books to a local charity.

7. Discuss what you've read. Whenever we experience something good, we talk about it. Talk about the books that excite you with your children. Your excitement will be contagious.

8. Write a note. Writing is a major component of literacy. Consider writing notes of appreciation, thanks or love to the special people in your life with your children. The recipient will appreciate the time and effort you took to hand-write it along with the sentiments you expressed.

9. Try reading in a different format. If you are used to printed books, try reading via audiobooks or digital books. Many public libraries and universities have books that patrons can borrow digitally.

10. Read the book version of your child’s favorite movie. After reading, be sure to take the time to discuss the similarities and differences between the versions of the book and movie.

Additional Family Resources:

The International Literacy Association offers a series of brochures with literacy tips for parents.

  • Getting Your Child Ready to Read

  • Supporting Your Beginning Reader

  • What Kids Really Want to Read

The Institute for Multi-Sensory Education is committed to promoting effective literacy instruction and understanding parents’ crucial role in their children’s reading development. They are thrilled to announce the launch of their parent resource pages on both IMSE.com and Orton-Gillingham.com, designed to empower parents with the knowledge and tools they need to support their child’s early literacy journey.

Kindergarten Kindergarten

Ms. Bartolotti, Ms. Fernandez, Ms. Fleischer, Ms. Watson, Mrs. Schain, Ms. Ramos

ELA: This week, the essential question was, "What shapes do you see around you?" The letter of the week was the letter Tt, and the sight word of the week was the word like. Kindergarteners listened to the story Shapes All Around, which is an informational story. Kindergarteners were able to retell the story by drawing one important fact! Kindergarteners also listened to the interactive read-aloud and answered comprehension questions. Our KOALA-fied Kindergarteners also independently read We Like Tam!, and students identified the main topic in this story. Way to go KOALA-fied Kindergarteners!

Social Studies: This week’s focus during Safety week was Fire Drill Safety. Students learned about firefighters and why we practice fire drills. We learned a fire safety song to help students remember the steps for a fire drill.

Science: Kindergarten had a great time celebrating Halloween in science. Students were asked which solution would dissolve candy corn the fastest. The solutions were salt water, water, baking soda water, and vinegar. Students drew their hypothesis and the results. They had a great time!

1st Grade 1st Grade

Ms. Vayda, Ms. Klag, Ms. Sheridan, Ms. Ramos, Mrs. Criqui, Ms. Romanowski

Math: We began Unit 3 in Investigations learning all about counting on and counting back from a given number. Fabulous first graders now know how to "lock in" the larger number in an equation and count on to add in order to find the sum and count back in order to find the difference. Students have been showing their best work in Math Workshop playing Five in A Row and Build It! We will continue to work on Unit 3 next week solving problems that answer the question: How many of each?

ELA: This week our essential question was, “How does your body move?” We continued reading non-fiction texts to learn more about this topic. Students completed comprehension, phonics, and vocabulary work in their reading/writing companion books. In phonics we learned to spell and read words with beginning consonant blends r and s. Our red words this week were: run, move, jump, two. During guided reading students focused on the main topic and found relevant details from the text to support it. During our whole group stories we practiced asking and answering questions to help us better understand the text. Students also learned about possessive nouns and how to use them in a sentence.

Social Studies: In Social Studies this week, We learned about natural features. The children participated in a fun activity where they were assigned a natural feature. They had to write descriptions about their natural features and their classmates had to guess which one it was. They really enjoyed this! We also discussed symbols on a map. We analyzed different symbols for mountains, water, state capitals, and more. Then the students completed a worksheet with map symbols. We continued our School Safety and Security lessons. During this week's lesson, we began by revisiting the importance of fire drill procedures. Our students participated by sharing the steps we take when there's a fire drill. We read a story called," I Can Be a Superhero During a Fire Drill". The children enjoyed this story and learned lots of great tips on fire drill safety from this book.

2nd Grade 2nd Grade

Ms. Rinaldi, Ms. Garcia, Ms. Criqui, Ms. Courtney, Mr. Donovan, Mrs. White

Math: This week we wrapped up Unit 1 of Investigations. We have been using numbers, symbols, pictures, and words to represent a solution. While reading our story problems, we are able to visualize, represent, and solve both addition and subtraction problems with the result unknown. We can now share strategies for solving both addition and subtraction problems. On Thursday, we reviewed the study guide in its entirety and had the opportunity to ask any questions in order to prepare for the assessment. On Friday, 2nd graders took their Unit 1 assessment. 2nd grade teachers are so proud of all of your hard work!

ELA: This week our second graders learned about fables. The essential question of this text set was "what can animals in stories teach us?" The reading skill they learned about was sequencing and characters within the story. The reading strategy they learned about is predicting what may happen next in the story. The phonics skill this week was soft c and soft g. They learned that c says the k sound next to a, o, u, but the c says the s sound next to e, i, y. They learned that the g says the g sound next to a, o, u, but the g says the j sound next to e, i, y. Students continued to work on their research reports, they're working so hard!

Social Studies: This week in social studies our Digital Citizens learned more about internet safety. We learned about digital trails in order to explore what information is OK to share online. We now know that the information we share online leaves a digital footprint or "trail". We also learned about internet privacy to understand that we should never give out private information online. We can now recognize the kind of information that is considered private.

Special Moments: On Tuesday, it was Halloween! We had our parade in the morning, and we were so excited to see so many of our grown-ups watching us show off our costumes. During ELA, we wrote a spooky story and decorated a haunted house to go with it. During math, we had Halloween centers with word problems, to help us prepare for our Unit 1 assessment. We also designed our Halloween craft thanks to our PTO moms. All students received Halloween goodie bags from their 2nd grade teachers. We hope everyone had an amazing Halloween trick or treating!

Mrs. Schain

Math: This week in math we continued our unit on multiplication and were using our 100s charts to identify multiples of 2,3,4,5,6 and 10. The students enjoyed diving deep into how multiplication works and identifying the strategies that work best for them. The strategies include skip counting, drawing equal groups and repeated addition. Next week we will be creating our own multiplication monsters using our new strategies to create them!

ELA: The third graders had an exciting week in ELA! They continued practicing RACES responses by analyzing and evaluating student examples, and used this to ask and answer questions about Halloween-related texts. The students continued reading our second core novel, Real Stories from my Time: The Underground Railroad by Bonnie Bader. This text is mostly nonfiction, but has a small section at the end of each chapter that follows a fictional character as she travels through the Underground Railroad. The students used this text to compare and contrast nonfiction and historical fiction, and identified unknown vocabulary words in both sections. During writing, students self- and peer- assessed their Pre-Narrative Writing Tasks, and used this information to improve upon their writing. At the end of the week, the students used all that they have learned about Narratives to write their Post-Narrative Task. They can't wait to share these in our first Writer's Cafe Share next week!

Social Studies: This week in social studies third graders reviewed various safety and security lessons in order to be safety superstars! Students reviewed good citizen safety tips to practice within the Hoboken community, as well as school safety tips to practice while at Connors. Students also reviewed fire drill procedures. Along with safety lessons, third graders completed their Unit 1 Performance Task, creating an informative postcard to highlight one of New Jersey's four regions.

Third Grade Thrill: Third graders had a BLAST celebrating Halloween this year! Thank you to the PTO for helping us put together materials for our spooktacularly fun activity... Spooky Slime!

Science: This week third graders worked hard on their straw rockets. Each group worked as a team to test their rockets. Students had to test their rockets 3 times and measure the distance. They worked so hard and did a great job!!

ELA: This week 5th graders continued reading our second core novel, Coraline. In addition, students completed Halloween themed ELA activities such as extending a narrative Halloween story. In addition, we focused on the probelm and solution text structure and seeing how this can be used in both fiction and non-fiction texts. Next week we are looking forward to finding out what happens next in Coraline, and completing our second post narrative writing task!

POR Math: This week in math we took our knowledge of volume and area to help us create our very own "volume city". The students used their critical thinking skills to map out the footprint of their city using area and then later built their buildings using what they know about volume of rectangular prisms. The students worked very hard all week to plan out their cities and construct their buildings. Please check out the photos below of the finished product!

Individualized Learning Pathway - Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Individualized Learning Pathway - Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth

During the Individualized Learning Pathway (ILP) period, students who have qualified to participate in the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) programming engage in a wide array of verbal course offerings that address their specific strengths and interests. Johns Hopkins CTY believes in researching and advancing ways to identify and nurture academically talented learners. CTY furthers research, guides educators and families and inspires students from diverse communities and backgrounds to pursue their intellectual passions and create the world of tomorrow.

This week, we would like to highlight our grades 2 and 3 field trip to the Meadowlands Environment Center through our membership with the Hudson County Gifted and Talented Consortium: Marsh Explorers

Our 2nd and 3rd Grade CTY students traveled to the Meadowlands Environment Center where they were greeted by the friendly and knowledgeable educators on-site. The students engaged in a program called Marsh Explorers that is designed to immerse them in the salt marsh habitat. Following the introduction to this unique wetland community, students had the exciting opportunity to act as field biologists, collecting live specimens. They took their findings back to the classroom, where the various specimens were identified based on physical characteristics. Our young biologists were challenged with the task of piecing together a local food chain! It was an incredibly exciting experience at the Meadowlands Environment Center!

This week in PE we finished up the football part of our first unit with grades 3-5. Grades K-2 were assessed on their throwing and catching using regular balls and students showed so much progress from the start of the unit! Most classes transitioned to the soccer portion of this unit and were introduced to the skills of dribbling and passing. On Tuesday we took the opportunity to celebrate Halloween with different holiday activities, Principal Addi even joined in a few of our Halloween games!

Music with Mr. Azzarto Music with Mr. Azzarto

Hello Everyone,

The week of October 30th, was a time to learn some music math and bass clef notes.

Complex music math is not an easy skill to master. For example, adding up whole notes, quarter rests and dotted half notes can be difficult. With lots of practice our students will be experts at this very important skill. The knowledge of note values is something they use when playing the various instruments that they play in the Connors Band. Here is Lucas with his music math worksheet filled in with all the correct answers.

In Ms. Rodriguez’s class it was time for a little bass clef fun. The notes on the bass clef are placed on different lines and spaces than the treble clef. This can make reading the notes on the bass clef difficult after you have mastered the treble clef. Sometimes it’s hard to get out of your old world and into a new one, but our 4th grade students did this with ease. Here is Janyvah with her bass clef notes perfectly filled in!

Mandarin with Ms. Ni Mandarin with Ms. Ni

This week in Mandarin students learned about colors and colored by Chinese numbers. Since next Tuesday is Election Day, students also got to discuss Please Vote for Me, a documentary about a third grade class in China that is holding a class election.
