Attendance and Absences Attendance and Absences

If your student is absent, excuse notes must be shared with Ms. Stephens, attendance counselor. To ensure accurate attendance records, please submit attendance excuse notes – including those from a doctor – in one of the following ways:

  • Submit through Aspen Go
  • Send an email to DealAttendance@k12.dc.gov
  • Drop off at school (Welcome Center)

Tardy arrivals and early dismissals require a submitted excuse note. You can also reach out to teachers for information about missed assignments.

Tardy Hall

Your student's transition to middle school includes a new responsibility - being on time for each class period each day. Sixth grade students who are late for three or more class periods per week will be required to attend tardy hall on Thursday afternoons from 3:30 - 4:30 PM.

Because students are missing important instruction when they are late for class, students at 6th grade tardy hall will leverage their time to complete missed work and reflect on ways they can ensure on-time arrival moving forward. If your student qualifies for tardy hall, you will be notified by Ms. Watson, 6th grade dean, during the week of their tardy hall assignment.

English and Language Arts with Mx. Winston

Next week in English, students will explore different character types through a series of short videos, collaborate with classmates, and connect their learning to our unit texts. We’ll also practice grammar and usage skills. This week’s binder check has been rescheduled for next week and will focus on the “Readings/Texts” section.

Scholars received the progress check for their Independent Reading Projects, which was due today; however, I’ll accept submissions next week when we return to school. As always, scholars should read their chosen book for at least 20 minutes each evening, including over the long weekend! Maintaining this habit will help them meet the project deadline of Monday, October 19th.

ELA Tutorial

Next week’s tutorials are a great opportunity to drop in, catch up on missing work, and get support with the project. Sessions will be offered Thursday and Friday after school from 3:30–4:30 p.m., as well as Friday during recess. Scholars attending recess tutorial should get a pass in advance to provide for a smooth dismissal process from lunch.

World Geography and Cultures with Ms. Wesselhoft

Next week is a short week, but we will be kicking off Unit 2: Sub-Saharan Africa!

Students will begin exploring the region through political and physical mapping activities, identifying important countries, major landforms, and bodies of water. We will also introduce key geography vocabulary to help students better understand the region's physical and human characteristics.

These activities will build a foundation for our upcoming lessons as we explore the geography, history, and cultures of Sub-Saharan Africa!

Earth and Space Science with Ms. Sagan

Hello scientists!

This past week we explored how convection currents and differences in density cause plate motion and then were introduced to seismic waves from earthquakes, and students built and tested Earthquake-proof buildings out of marshmallows and toothpicks.

Next week, we will focus on reviewing for our Roots Summative and wrapping up our Plate Motion Unit. As always, please encourage your student to study using all available materials.

Roots!

We will have our Roots Summative next week on Friday, October 16th. Since this is your student’s first Roots Summative, please ensure that they are thoroughly reviewing the roots beforehand and that they have completed their study guide. Their roots study guide is due Friday, Oct. 16th.

We use Blookets to help students review, and the Roots Summative is no exception! There are two links posted to Canvas – one is for students who have Blooket accounts and want to collect “Blooks” (little icons that you get for completing tasks), and the other is for students who do not have Blooket accounts. Both have the same capacity for reviewing, so please ensure that your student has found the one that works best for them!

Notes from MLL Support

Last week we learned about vowels, consonants, and beginning letters in Code 1 and 2. We also learned key vocabulary in Code 2 and Comprehension workbooks (i.e., stamina, extreme, determination, impressive, etc). Students are encouraged to review key vocabulary in their notes and complete student application in READ 180 at home.
