Cheetah PridePress! Weekly Update January 20, 2023

Head Cheetah's Message

Families,

It is so hard to believe that we are halfway through the school year! Today, our grade 3 students celebrated the 90th day of school; and in two weeks, we’ll recognize the 100th day! Not only do these celebratory days provide an opportunity to come together as a school community, but they also provide a chance for our students to practice their math skills.

On Monday, our food services team will transform the cafeteria into an elegant café. Please encourage your student(s) to wear a fancy outfit and to bring their best manners for an exquisite dining experience!

As a reminder, there will be an early dismissal on Friday so that our staff may engage in an afternoon of professional learning.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Joey and Andrea

Grade 3 Celebrated Halfway Day

Today was the 90th day of school. That means we’re half-way through the school year. In recognition of this milestone, the grade 3 team celebrated “Half-Way Day” by participating in activities that demonstrate halves. What a fantastic way to practice those fraction skills! Way to go, Grade 3!

Hi everyone,

We hope you had a great Holiday vacation, unfortunately minus the snow!

As always, fitness, stretching, and exercising in PE class is always stressed and practiced, through our warm ups, and the unit for that class.

In Grade PreK- Grade 1 we returned to cooperative and low organizational games for a week, stressing locomotor movements, mobility, spatial awareness, cooperation, sportsmanship, and of course, fun!

The second week we spend the entire week on the new “rock climbing wall”, going over all the safety rules, the various climbing techniques and strategies, how we will be utilizing and implementing the climbing wall into our units and curriculum, and of course, climbing a ton! The children were very excited, as you might expect, and they did an excellent job with everything we presented and with their climbing and “spotting”. Spotting, which at the elementary school age/level, is basically verbal support, guidance, and teamwork/cooperation. The PE coaches are the only spotters that are on the crash mat, and, if necessary, would physically support a student. The children will spend time on the climbing wall every week as part of our warm up and curriculum!

We are now beginning our beach ball volleyball skills unit, with more about that unit in the next newsletter!

In Grade 2 and Grade 3 the students returned to their last week of our “basketball skills” unit and the “basketball shooting club”. We have many “clubs” throughout the year where the children have a chance to have some fun and “test/challenge” themselves with skills assessments for the many units and activities that we cover. The children did great, had some fun, challenged themselves, worked with their classmates, and had a really nice first week back- then it was off the much anticipated climbing wall!

Thanks for all your positive support of your children at home, they all work very hard in PE class. We are, and they should be, very proud of all that they try to do!

Here's hoping for some snow soon!

Coaches Corner: Literacy News Coaches Corner: Literacy News

Our youngest learners continue to develop their literacy skills across the curriculum. Kindergarten students are activating their super powers in the “battle” to decode words. They use their pointer power to be sure what they say matches what they see and slider power to read all the sounds in a word. We exercise persistence power to persevere through longer words.

First grade students have started writing reviews. These authors are creating persuasive reviews on their favorite foods, toys, movies, and more. They are using strong reasons to support their opinions and convince you to read that book or play that video game.

Nurses Notes

Dear Families of Memorial Elementary Students,

The winter season is upon us; along with all of the cold, flu, and stomach bugs that come with it! Please consider the following guidelines, provided by the school nurse, for sending students to school:

Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms:

  • Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough
  • Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)
  • Mild headache and/or stomachache
  • Fatigue

Definitely keep your child at home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms:

  • Fever (100.4 degrees or higher. May return to school after 24 hours of no fever WITHOUT fever reducing medications)
  • Vomiting (Even once. Must wait 24 hours after last vomit episode to return to school)
  • Diarrhea (Must wait 24 hours after last episode to return to school)
  • Chills
  • General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness, and/or muscle aches
  • Frequent congested, wet, or croupy cough
  • Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose

To help prevent the flu and other colds, please remind your child(ren) about good hygiene habits:

  • Wash hands frequently
  • Do not touch eyes, nose, or mouth
  • Cover mouth and nose when sneezing/coughing and then wash hands
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick

Often when a child awakens with vague complaints (the way colds and flu begin) it is wise to observe your child at home for an hour or two before deciding whether or not to bring them to school. Your child should be physically able to participate in all school activities on returning to school. Keeping a sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom. Thank you in advance for helping to make this year at school as healthy as possible.

Kindly,

The Health Office Team,

Nurse Katie and Miss Michelle
